It happened just so: I found myself drifting off against my will, mesmerised by the faint shadows cast by the fireplace onto the wall opposite me. My mind, already overwrought with nerves and tension caused by so much waiting, conjured up strange interpretations in the flickers of light and dark, as if some incomprehensible puppet show was being put on for my amusement.
Such was my state of mind that I at first did not notice the shadows on the wall taking shape. When I did, however, a paralysing sort of terror found its place wrapped around my heart, digging its talons in between my ribs.

Summary
Ten years prior, a terrible event happened. A terrible event caused by an honorable man. This event single-handedly would cause this man to be considered dishonorable. This event will be discussed later, as it is the year 1930 now, and I have better things to do than explain all the backstory and lore at the moment.
Colonel Ainsley William Ginger arrived at the town party late. Not horrifically late, but late enough to make the storyteller anxious for the twenty-seven minutes that it took him to arrive. This was not unusual for Ginger to be this late, but it was unusual for a polished and previously well-respected colonel to be as unpunctual as he was.
Not that it matters now.

Summary
In freshman year of high school, Danny pulled away from his friends without explanation.
At sixteen, he disappeared. Sam and Tucker presumed him dead. His parents insisted he was taken by ghosts.
As young adults, they run into him in Gotham, of all places. It's a stroke of luck that brings their best friend back to them.
If only it was that easy for the Bats to find the god damn engineer that's been running circles around them while they try to track him down.
Tim's not sure what he'll do first when he finally finds the brilliant bastard - kiss him or punch his teeth in.

Considering how many of the Bats and the Birds have died and come back to life, it was only a matter of time for some people interested in the afterlife to come poking around. The detectives can't seem to uncover any information about the mysterious white vans, however.
And they keep losing the mysterious boy who seems to be the one person in Gotham to know anything at all.

Danny’s looking at him like he’s crazy. His hair’s dried up into a mess of waves, and there’s some tomato seeds on the corner of his mouth. “You just bailed me out of jail. And you think this is a good idea?”
“I don’t have bad ideas, Fenton. And like you’ve just said, I have collateral on you.”
“So you’re blackmailing me into pretending to date you?”
Tim shrugs. “Or you could just sign the NDA.”

Danny's trying to recover all the shards to an entity's chalice so that it'll stop destroying the zone while tensions rise amongst his subjects- and trying to finish high school.
Tim's juggling his case load, his work as CEO, and does not have time to be embroiled in a sex scandal right now. If that means he has to pretend to date a very suspicious heir to a rival company, then so be it.
It's a mutually beneficial relationship. So what if Tim's becoming a little too intrigued by the illusive, powerful Phantom? So what if Danny can't stand the Justice League for leaving him to deal with all of Amity's problems when he was just 14? That's a superhero thing.
And their fake boyfriend has no clue that they're a superhero.

Danny Fenton had nowhere to go and no one he could turn to without putting them in danger. Except, perhaps, the hero who'd cared for, respected, and trained Danny for all too short a time.
Dick Grayson had never told anyone he'd once been trapped in the Ghost Zone. He'd also never forgotten the promise he'd made sure to get from Danny Phantom.
Jason didn’t know what was going on but he was really very pissed that there was another kid with a y-shaped scar on their chest and eyes that feel like frozen reflections of home. Thankfully, there were suddenly several new targets for his rage and Dick seemed rather more inclined to join Jason than stop him.

Tim's secret is that he and his parents are wolf shifters, and they refuse to let anyone know about it. But it's fine. He can shove down his feelings and instincts that whisper that he's been abandoned and live a perfectly normal Bat-photographer life.
Except that there's a black market for shifters and the way home is longer than he had thought possible.
