At the very top of his feed, already having garnered almost a million likes despite being up for less than 20 minutes, is a post.

    A joint post.

    A joint post between NeilJos10 and A.Minyard_3.

There is so much wrong, because Andrew doesn’t post, Andrew doesn’t take selfies, Andrew doesn’t go to parties, and Andrew certainly doesn’t race for Ferrari.

But there it is, the evidence right there on his own phone. It’s a selfie, Josten’s wild curls and perfect smile, Andrew’s signature deadpan face and brooding stare. Sitting atop Andrew’s golden blonde hair is a bright red Ferrari hat. The caption is simple: guess who lost a bet.

Kevin stares, dumbfounded. Andrew went to the party, Andrew repped another team's merch. It's a total breach of his contract, and while he won’t be fired -- no team is stupid enough to lose Andrew Minyard -- he will be fined heavily and probably subjected to a long and torturous meeting berating him for his actions. He probably doesn’t even care.

Their coach sighed, heavily, “Management decided we’ve gone enough years without a mascot. This was their solution.” Sputters and cries of indignation rang out through the empty bowl.

“But it’s not even a fox?!” That was Allison’s voice, loud and indignant.

Intrigued, Andrew brought his gaze to the sorry group masquerading as a team, only to blink at the sheer absurdity of what he was seeing. Standing next to Wymack at the edge of the rink was their mascot. It was orange, hideously orange, with a yellow mane- beard (?) falling around its face. If you were being extremely generous, something like fox ears were sticking out of its head, but they were more like drooping tufts of fur than anything else. Sandwiched between them was a black helmet, but Andrew’s gaze caught on the creature’s eyes. They were too wide to comfortably stare into, an eerie bright blue, and made of similar material to the plastic googly eyes that decorated the kids toys Andrew never was allowed to have.

The mascot- creature- demonspawn from the depths of hell ignored them all to stare back at Andrew.

He glances up as if he can feel someone looking at him and Andrew is assaulted by a pair of unnaturally blue eyes. They seem cold and distant, a silent challenge for Andrew to do—something, but Andrew doesn’t know what.

All he can think is that the boy is dangerously pretty. The idea of asking him to go into the alleyway between Eden’s and the bar next door for a quickie flits through his mind before the boy scoffs and rolls his eyes.

    “Can I help you?”

    Summary

Neil Josten has spent his whole life running—from his father, from his name, from the moment he knows is coming. Figure skating was supposed to be a way to exist without hiding. Instead, it got him disqualified, erased, and left sleeping in a storage closet.

Andrew Minyard doesn't skate for joy. He skates for money and because Kevin Day showed up at his rink one night with a broken hand and nowhere else to go. Touch is not an option. Trust is not a word in his vocabulary.

They're forced to skate together anyway.

Now they have one year to qualify for the Olympics. One year to learn lifts and spins and the impossible art of being seen. One year before Neil's past catches up and takes everything.

But Andrew keeps looking at him like he's worth staying for. And Neil keeps thinking that maybe—just maybe—somewhere in the arc of Andrew's blade, he's finally found someplace he doesn't have to run from.

“Do you really think your art is that meaningless?” Neil asks him incredulously. “I chose them. You put them on me. They make me different from everybody else. They’re permanent. They make me feel-,” he almost laughs at himself as he says it, but doesn’t, “-Permanent.”

Andrew doesn’t reply. He flicks the end of his cigarette over the side of the roof. Neil watches it fall, then asks quietly, “If you think your work is worthless, why do you keep putting it on me?”

Andrew turns to face him. Their eyes meet, and Andrew says, “You’re interesting.” Before Neil can respond to this rather substantial admittance from Andrew, he keeps speaking. “Mildly. You’re 1% interesting, which is more than I can say for every other fool that steps foot in that shop.”

AU. Andrew is a tattoo artist. Neil is searching for something to make him permanent.
