Summary
“Miss Fia,” an insistent voice rouses Fia in her sleep, “wake up.”
Fia doesn’t feel like waking up yet, so she’s content to ignore the voice, but then she’s being repeatedly – and quite rudely – poked into her cheek and forehead with a rather pointy edge. She sits up in her bedding, batting Bukvar away with her hand as she levels him with her best approximation of a stormy glare. “What’s going on?” she hisses, still groggy. “I’m a growing girl child, Bukvar, I need my sleep.”
As he nervously flaps his pages and covers in front of her, Bukvar has the decency to at least look apologetic. “Sorry, Miss Fia, but it’s Batilda.” The mention of her witch serves to wake Fia up way more effectively than anything else has so far. “She’s acting… strange.”

“You can’t just try to take something that disappeared back. Even if it once meant something to you, it doesn’t now, so –”
“Oh, the necklaces? No, I’ve never worn one, you see,” she says easily, “but it’s true I was looking for a particular one in there. Bukvar pointed it out to me and got it.”
“Why were you trying to take it? Is it magical?” Zirk asks in a hushed voice, looking only mildly perturbed discussing something that shouldn’t even be thought of, truth be told.
“It certainly is something,” Fia states, “and since I would take one for safekeeping anyway, I thought to myself, ‘Why not that one?’, right?”
It gives Henry, who has been quietly panicking and fuming, a pause. “Safekeeping?” he repeats. “Are you…?”
He doesn’t dare to finish that question, but Fia seems to understand. She shakes her head, momentarily looking forlorn. “No, but someone important to me did remember the things that the rest of us forget,” she says quietly. “And I – I try to salvage what I can, I suppose.”
...
In a world where people are compelled to forget objects and concepts, Henry, Fia and Zirk are trying their best. Loosely based on Yōko Ogawa's "The Memory Police".

Hey Bev,
Would you look at that? I’m writing you a letter. Bet you didn’t see that one coming.
Are you and Erlin having fun in the Feywild? Taking an anniversary trip was a smart idea, he seemed like he could use a break and a change of scenery. You better don’t forget to give our greetings to Cran and Derlin when you visit them. I know you’re coming back next month, but I thought I’d catch you up on what’s been going on – trust me, it’s a lot.

“You could have let Louis suck me dry, and worry about the drugs in his bloodstream later.” Maybe Louis would feel a little guilty after he sobered up, maybe not – ultimately, it wouldn’t really matter: Daniel would have been another dead boy brought over to the apartment on Divisadero Street. “You could have dragged him out of the sun, just killed me, and tried to salvage that mess of a situation.” Daniel, disposed of; the tapes, gone; playing the part of a remorseful and caring husband, engaged. “But no, you had to put on a fucked up horror show that went on for days, punishing him through me.” If Daniel hadn't lived, he wouldn't be here in Dubai; and if he were just any award-winning investigative journalist, he still wouldn't have been asked to come here for a re-do interview. “You made me important,” he spells out, a punchline that Armand seemed to be missing, in all this.
“And haven’t I been reaping the fruits of it every night and day for the past forty-nine years,” Armand muses, his sharp fingernail scraping the skin dangerously close to Daniel's hammering pulse point.

Riz knows that, technically, he doesn’t need to be coming to school; they aced the Last Stand for a reason, after all. Still, there are things to do when he comes by in those final weeks — some of the clubs he signed up for are actually interesting, now that he doesn’t just stumble from one meeting to the other, half conscious, only for the sake of extra credit. And, of course, there’s budding student government stuff. (He did mean it when he told Kristen he wants to be involved.)
That’s when one afternoon, when he’s coming back from the library, he sees several packed boxes in front of the guidance counselor's office, and stops, confused.
There’s a fleeting urge to not get involved, lest he risks another attempt at a pep talk from Jawbone, but investigative instincts win over. He knocks on the open door.
“Hey, Jawbone?” he calls out.
...
Three conversations Riz has about Kipperlilly Copperkettle, post-Ragenarok.

“Everything’s ready,” Irina whispers, breathless and eager as she slides into the pew next to Fia. Just in time, as her father's evening sermon is about to start; Fia looks his way first, but he's still flipping through a thick book on the lectern. Just then she risks a glance at Irina.
Her friend’s face is turned towards her, so Fia easily sees the telltale signs of Irina’s latest wanderings: cheeks flushed rosy red from exhaustion and running, a thin sheen of sweat on her forehead, her silver hair, which Fia so attentively braided this morning, all in disarray, loose strands falling around her face. There's a small twig stuck in Irina's hair, just behind her ear, and Fia almost reaches to pick it out, but then she remembers herself, and only points to the same spot on her head to indicate it to Irina.
“No one saw where you were coming from?” Fia asks under her breath as Irina hastily brushes the twig out of her hair.

"You know, Pete, remember when you called to ask me if I wanted to go to a cooking class with you and I said no and almost hung up because it was like six in the morning?"
From where he's carefully sifting and mixing dry ingredients together, Pete rolls his eyes. "It was literally yesterday, Sofie."
"Well," Sofia continues, undeterred, beating the ingredients in her bowl with sharp, relentless focus, "I thought you meant one of those stupidly expensive courses where they show you how to make fancy food, like, I don't know, those colorful French macaroons, and then you can't even take it home because it's so tiny you eat everything at once. But this…"
Pete grins, gesturing around with a whisk. "This is much better, right?"

Summary
By the time Utahime finally makes her way to the street she lives on, it’s started to snow – a light downfall so far, but you can never know for sure in February. She wraps the scarf tighter around herself, feeling cold and drained, as she walks to her apartment complex; she wonders if her flatmates are home, considers if she has the energy to cook something or if she should just order in.
"Hey, Utahime," a voice calls, shaking her out of her thoughts.
Utahime startles, stops in her tracks by the entrance to the building. There, leaning against the wall, smoking a cigarette (and earning herself a stink eye from an older woman who just came outside – one of Utahime’s neighbors, probably), is Shoko. She seems unbothered by the cold, her coat unbuttoned, a hat nowhere in sight.
A moment passes as they just stand there, regarding each other. All the air seems to rush into Utahime’s lungs, and then out through her mouth, along with the words, “You shouldn’t smoke.” She blinks once, a snowflake falling onto her eyelashes, and makes a conscious effort to inhale. “Here,” she adds lamely. “And at all.”
...
Utahime and Shoko, over the years.

Sasha has her chair turned away from the door, gently fanning herself with a file she’s too tired to continue reading when she hears a light knock on the door and it creaks open. “Hey, boss, I have something for you.”
“If it’s not Martha Lynch’s statement, Tim, then I don’t want it,” she calls back, rubbing the bridge of her nose. She should get new glasses finally.
“Oh, that’s a shame,” Tim remarks, mock heartbroken. “I guess I will take this box of chocolates and the continuation of Trevor the vampire hunter’s statement that I accidentally found, and give them to someone who will appreciate them.”
Sasha spins in her chair so abruptly she almost falls out of it. “Wait. You can come in, actually.”
Tim grins, entering the office. “That’s what I thought,” he says cheerfully, brandishing both the box and the file. The moment he sits down, Sasha snatches the latter out of his hand. “Aaand there she goes,” he mutters under his breath, sounding amused.
...
Sasha and Tim navigate things like work emergencies, trauma, crafts, losing one's humanity, hair cuts and not giving up.

Georgie makes an affirmative noise. "You go to a couple of events like this one — well," she scrunches up her nose, "maybe a little better than this one, and you start recognizing people and making connections. It's not a huge community, after all."
"I guess so. A lot of people seem to be in for the experience and then drop out when they find it disappointing," Melanie says and shrugs. "But it is a job, so."
At that, Georgie gives her an amused look. "Paranormal investigating? I mean, sure, but why not start a show about, I don’t know, gaming or literally anything else instead? Would be much easier."
"Too mainstream. I like a little challenge, getting into places where I'm not wanted and all that," she answers, solemn. It’s not a lie, though the truth is probably more complicated than what she’s figured out so far. What matters is that her response makes Georgie laugh and it's such a nice, warm sound, and Melanie thinks, pleased, I made her laugh.

“Because you were being annoying,” she just says.

Summary
Galo knows his apartment, knows how to move in it without making a sound, yet, even before he enters the living room, a chiding voice calls out, "Your place has terrible, practically non-existent security. And you consider yourself a public officer?"
The tension bleeds out of Galo's body as he finally rounds the corner and there, on his couch, sprawled out as if he owns the place, is —
"Lio!" Galo finds himself blinking stupidly a couple of times; it's not like he isn't happy to see him, but — "What the hell! Did you just — did you break into my apartment?" Lio only tilts his head to the side, ever so slightly. Galo sags against the door frame. "Man, I'd have given you a spare key." Then, he abruptly straightens up again. "Wait, that's the fourth floor! How did you get in?"
Lio doesn't grace him with an answer to this question, either, and instead announces, "You're being kidnapped, Galo Thymos. Get ready."
"Huh?" Galo just utters eloquently.
...
Galo, Lio and a day in the desert.

However, it gives Galo, who was thinking about how he’s going to put the pretty invitation up on the fridge, a pause. Seeing as she’s standing the closest to him, he peers over Aina’s shoulder to look at her invitation, the elegant, stylish letters spelling Aina Ardebit and guest. Then he looks back to his own, glancing at Galo Thymos and Lio Fotia as if he’s seeing it for the first time.
...
A wedding invitation makes Galo wonder how exactly people perceive his relationship with Lio. It then snowballs from there.

Maybe it’s the undisturbed quiet of the night, maybe it’s the knowledge that she’s safe here, or maybe it’s faint yet unmistakable scent lingering in the air, one that always reminds her of Shinobu: something sharp, chemical, broken down by a subtle smell of wisteria. It’s not an unpleasant combination, though; Mitsuri doesn’t think anything about Shinobu could be off-putting. Not to her, anyway.

Summary
He sighs, pockets his phone and picks up the mug. He shouldn’t be surprised; it is ugly outside, so there’s bound to be people looking for something warm and dry.
However, as Yuugo comes into the hall, he’s not prepared for… that.
There’s a group of kids waiting there and after three mistakes, he finally counts fourteen of them. The oldest ones, he’d give around twelve years old, the youngest ones — five or so. They’re barely dressed for the weather — all of them have cheap, plastic raincoats, but their shoes, solid as they may look, must be soaking wet. Their clothes make this merry company look even more strange; kind of old-fashioned, worn-out, mismatched, stray, even.
A girl at the front of the group finally takes notice of him as her curious gaze falls on him. She tears her raincoat off; her hair is vibrant orange and an antenna stands at the top, unflattened by either rain or hood.
“Good evening, mister!” she greets, overly cheerful and friendly. “The weather is rather awful, isn’t it? The door was open, so we let ourselves in.”
...
Runaways from Grace Field orphanage showing up at his shelter force Yuugo to make a decision.

Summary
Ray has recently read a book on something called language of flowers. He wonders if the girls know about it, if they picked the flowers based on their meaning. Asters are for love and patience. Magnolias, for poise, dignity and pride. Pansies, for thoughtfulness and caring.
And then an icy wave washes over Ray as he recognizes red poppies — for dreams and fantasy, but also sleep, sedation and death.
Looking at Isabella holding the bouquet as something precious, her face fair and content, Ray thinks, not for the first time, that he would like nothing more than to be wrong about everything. About the outside world, their house, the fates of the siblings who left.
Most of all, he wishes he was wrong about her, and himself.
...
Sometimes it takes time, distance or a change in circumstances, sometimes — all three. Ray finds himself forced to re-evaluate what he thought he knew about Isabella.

A few days later, before breakfast, Emma gathers as many members of their family as she can without raising suspicions. She knows the word will spread to the rest fast enough.
“Norman got us a present,” she says, holding up an off-brand camera. That earns her some excited and surprised cheers. “I think it’d be nice for it to rotate between us. Everybody is encouraged to take pictures of whatever and whoever they want,” she adds with a smile, passing the camera to a startled Nigel, “but the more of them with Ray, the better. However,” she holds up her finger, “don’t let him catch you in the act!”
“Is that like... a secret project?” Ivet asks curiously.
Emma lets her smile stretch into a grin. “Yes, it’s exactly like that. And we’re very good at these, aren’t we?”
