Excitement overrode caution, and Daffy snatched up the contract and pen. “Oh, boy, oh, boy! Thith ith my big break!”
Without even bothering to read, he signed his name on the dotted line.
Bugs took the contract and pen back with a broad smile. Standing up, he held out his hand to shake. “Welcome to the Magnus Institute, Daffy Duck.”

Jon's never been terribly comfortable with loose threads, and ever since he learned Martin's fanfiction history included self-insert stories featuring him (well, an exagerrated, incredibly violent, theatrical, steampunk pirate version of him), he's been rather... distracted. Since they are in town already, Jon decides a little detour to the library is in order.

To Martin's horror and Jon's euphoric joy, it has come to light that, in his younger years, Martin used to write self-insert fanfiction about one of the characters from the obscure band The Mechanisms. This character happend to be Jon's stage persona, First Mate Jonny d'Ville. Martin would like to pretend this revelation never happened. Jon cannot rest until he has found these fanfictions...

This fic has pulled me back in a couple of times after I thought it ended. The original planned story takes place from chapters 1-6. Then 7 is an epilogue based on a comment from a reader. 8-11 are a later addition, and could be read as a second piece.

Actually he's exactly not who he says: he is Not-Martin, a monster who didn't expect to have anything to do with the archival staff beside feeding off their terror that Something Wasn't Right. But then he started feeling something akin to "emotions" when it comes to a certain Archivist who is always in trouble.

'Something crashes into the fence at the bottom of the garden, making the hanging baskets of dried-up flowers that Jon hasn't had the presence of mind to remove sway against the wood. He thumbs the tape recorder off and shoves it into the pocket of his jacket, finding his feet on the patio. The penknife feels pitifully miniscule in his fingers, so he exchanges it for the pipe.
More banging, and one of the fence panels starts to buckle, the wood splintering in sharp snaps.
'Hello?' Jon calls out, finding his tone strangely polite even now, devoid of either the fear or the righteous anger he feels. 'Are you-?'
Alive? A person?'

“I broke my phone,” the caller says.
Martin’s heart sinks. Just his luck to get a claim right when he’s supposed to be going home, and this caller sounds like the kind of person who’ll probably spend ages going over everything in pedantic detail and demanding reassurance on a dozen points, most of which will be completely irrelevant.
Oh well. Here goes.

What if Martin didn’t get the job at the Magnus Institute and instead ended up working for a mobile phone insurance call centre? What if Jon happened to have insurance with that same company, and kept on calling in with increasingly bizarre phone insurance claims?
Aka Jon and Martin fall in love over the phone.

Martin opens his mouth, presumably to ask a follow up question, when the clock strikes 6 o’clock and Jon grabs his briefcase as he begins to walk out of the Archives. Just as he’s about to climb the steps, he sees Sonja out of the corner of his eye and panics. She knows about him and Daisy, exactly why they’re married, and always greets him with a phrase that’s funny in every moment but this one. He tries to let her know with his eyes, but he can already see her lips starting to form the words, right where all of his assistants can hear. “So, Jon, how’s the wife doing?”

Jon didn't expect to live through his boyfriend stabbing him in the chest. He expected to die, and for Martin to join him soon after. So why is he waking up at his desk, at the tail end of February in 2016? Martin is with him, so he would be perfectly content to let the miracle be, except for one tiny, miniscule detail. There is a woman in the Archives he doesn't know, and there is something very Wrong about her. For starters, she wasn't there the first time around. She's American, which he definitely would've remembered, and she just feels...off. So much for a fresh start...
