... In the final issue, not everything gets tied up with a bow, but some things happen off-screen, or during the credits roll. Other scripts and notes were found in the author's house after the run had ended, but those are considered tenuously canon by the community at best. Still, it provides an ending to some of the side characters which fans had been clamouring for. One can only imagine what the next sequel run would have been if the editors hadn't forced the abrupt end to [the series] and soft reboot the whole franchise, replacing the author entirely, who then went missing completely, leaving only notes behind...

And still, the blighted wastes creep from the south, undeterred by politics.

Slumped over the table is a vaguely familiar officer lying face-down in a puddle of slowly cooling tea. Damon sits across from him nursing a coffee. He looks up and smiles when she steps inside. "Lana! Thank you for coming so quickly. We don't have any drinks left, but our good friend Alec isn't going to be eating his croissant if you're feeling peckish."
"I don't want his croissant," Lana says. "Couldn't you have killed him anywhere else?"
In which: Damon needs help hiding a body, Ema wants ramen, and Lana spends her time cleaning up other people's messes.

Back then, the fact that her older sister was a grownup had been the most wonderful thing in the world. It was what all kids dreamed of: No parents, no rules, just you and your best friend—your big sister who knew all there was to know.
Ema has never felt unlike herself. Scientifically speaking, herself is the only self she could possibly be, and there's no way to express this that would make it untrue. As long as she's been alive (or at least, conscious) she has felt plain and curious and has known that the world is full of strange and incredible things that aren't made for her, and maybe when people, real people, learn these sorts of things, they go and find a group of like-minded people. In the schoolyard, this is an easily-tested hypothesis—nerds find nerds, pretty girls find pretty girls, etcetera. A gaggle of weirdos. A secret language. But all Ema has is Lana; and now, Lana is different.
