    “T-that’s good. Please, I… I…” Caine sniffed. His shoulders trembled as he forced the words out. “You can fix me all you want, but if you really think you’re making a difference, let me… feel good.”

    Kinger’s heart shattered into a thousand pieces in that moment. If he had a mouth, it would surely be hanging open.

    Then Caine opened his mouth, letting Kinger look into his tear-filled eyes.

    “I-I thought that by torturing you guys, I...” He rubbed his arm across his eyes in a futile attempt to dry the tears. “I thought that was what I needed to finally feel good, but it was not! Why?!”

    Kinger stood up from his chair, but didn’t dare take another step forward when Caine aggressively gestured his hand at him.

    “I-I never feel good! I live to make you happy and get nothing in return,” he cried. “I want to be able to feel. I-is that too human for me, too?!”

    Or, Kinger manages to shut down Caine at the end of episode 8. He's now trying to fix it, but unresolved issues get in the way.

    She wasn’t around anymore, but death had never stopped a human from speaking, and it wouldn’t stop you.

    You would tell that headstone (and that tree, that picture, that hill) about how you were no longer in a manufactured, digitized headache of a landscape. You’d tell her that her husband was doing well. That he was the kindest person you’d ever met.

    You’d thank her for loving him. Tell her that he still loved her too; that he’d likely never stop loving her, though you’re sure that she’d heard that from him first. You’d thank her for loving him because now, to your immense privilege, you get to love him.

    In which Caine, now human (his truest wish), wonders how a machine ought to fit into the natural world. In which Caine ruminates on what is perhaps the most precious relationship of his life.

    “You looked like you could use a drink,” smiles an unfamiliar voice.

    The man now sitting next to him is… someone Caine has never seen here before. He’s wiry, with a shock of blond hair standing up in places that have clearly been attempted to be tamed. Square, wired glasses sit atop a crooked nose that looks like it’s seen at least one break in its time, and behind them, two bright and kind eyes.

    Caine is enraptured.

    or,

    Caine goes out on Christmas Eve (who doesn't, when they're sad and alone?) and meets a new friend.

    This is our problem, because...? He checks, bored, even as he stands around and pretends to listen to the Princess' latest inane marketing strategy.
