He wished, sometimes, that they wouldn’t run, that he could reach into their minds and have them walk to him, willing. But he knew it was important to them to try and prolong the brief wisps that were their lives. They needed to want to save themselves, so that for a time, every second mattered. Every argument, every laugh, every dreary afternoon collapsing into night mattered. They needed to imagine it was worth preserving, worth repeating. This was what made the next part easier. Without pondering what they were fighting for, they could not understand that they were fighting for nothing. They could not grasp the crushing weight that was about to be lifted from them—that they were about to be lifted from—if they did not believe for a moment that this weight was theirs to love.

Summary
The thing about watching the breath leaving a body and knowing that it was your fault is that that moment never leaves you. Through nightmares, through flashbacks, through slots in the fabric of reality where time spills over and soaks into the soles of your feet. It didn’t matter how you justified it, in the end—murder was murder, and the tang of death never truly leaves your tongue.
Still, he couldn’t make himself regret killing. Were he to slip through one of those time slots and find himself in a position to start over again, he would not change the choices he had made.

Summary
Louisiana, 1973. Louis de Pointe du Lac struggles after the death of his brother. Unable to move past the sense of guilt, a bottle and a bunch of bad decisions has lead to institutionalisation in some shitty joke of a hospital. With a stubbornness his father would be proud of, Louis refuses to allow himself to get better, despite the best efforts of his mildly attractive psychiatrist and a well-meaning but highly annoying young nurse. Comfortable in his self-imposed prison, Louis has no desire to get better. Things change with the arrival of a loud, egotistical Frenchman who is determined to draw everyone into his orbit.

He doesn't plan to add wrangling Lestat, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet and his kind-of-ex-husband, into the mix – until Armand comes knocking, and makes him an offer he can't refuse.
