The trail marker is a cluster of five squared posts in staggered heights, painted a weathered grey that's peeling away at the corners. The shortest barely comes up to mid-calf, while the tallest reaches a few inches above Shouto's head. Engravings on each post spell out Shouto's fate in stark, black-painted relief: Southern Terminus, Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.
Mexico to Canada, the carvings say, 2650 miles.
A stupid fucking idea.
Or, Shouto hikes the Pacific Crest Trail to outrun his past. It follows him anyway.

Majima took his elbows off the table and slammed it with his palm, making the beer cans and the ashtray jump, laughing maniacally.
“There's no way I'm comin' all the way out to this backwoods town without even tryin' to find my favorite dragon!”
“Speaking of that,” Kiryu said weakly, “How exactly did you find me?”
Majima's grin broadened. “Nah-ah, Kiryu-chan,” he wiggled his finger. “A guy can't go 'round revealin' his sources. Let's just say a little bird told me 'bout an apartment that the Dojima family had in Sapporo. Decided to check it out. Secured a spot in that cafe on the corner and waited for ya to show up. Honin' my detective skills.”
“So when you saw me coming,” Kiryu said slowly, trying to comprehend. “You climbed up on that roof like a cat and jumped me?”
Majima hee-hee-heed in response. “Ya gotta have that element of surprise in your life, Kiryu-chan. Otherwise, it's just plain borin’!”
Kiryu looked at him incredulously. Rumor had it that Majima was batshit crazy. He was starting to believe it.
