An AU idea (inspired by this post) where Stan threw a rope to Ford as he was being pulled into the portal. He let go of his journal in favor of grabbing the rope and it was lost to Bill's dimension. Stan had saved him and for that, he was grateful. They talked and forgave each other for the past and all seemed well for as much as a day. That was when Bill's ruthless anger became apparent and he took full advantage of his deal with Ford. Thirty years later, the demon is still punishing him for his refusal to rebuild the portal.

Stanley Pines is the last person to label himself as the guy to save the world. Especially because the world is so fucked at this point, no one can do it. He stopped believing it possible about half an hour after he witnessed a giant yellow triangle take a bite out of the planet— yeah, he has no idea either, thanks.
He plans for the maybe-week the world has left to stick to feasible goals, like “eat one last meal,” and “don’t die until you get to do it yourself.” But just as the second of those is about to fall through, he’s grabbed by a man with a weird tape measure, whisked off to another time, and told that none of this is supposed to have happened. And that they’re apparently trusting the fate of the world to… him?
They insist that he’s the guy for the job, apparently based on exactly how the triangle got the chance to end the world in the first place. It was, according to them, one idiotic schmuck who let himself get conned. They just need Stan to kill the guy before that happens.
And, sure. It’s not like Stan’s life could get any more insane than it already has. Who do they need him to kill exactly?

Summary
After a mishap with a misplaced Time Tape, Stan and Ford Pines are whisked away from their quiet life on the Stan'O'War to a year both would rather forget: 1982. Ford, landing in New Mexico, tracks down a young Stanley, while Stan stumbles across the disheveled shack in the woods that contains horrors unknown. Together, paired with their twins' younger selves, Ford and Stan must find each other and get back to their own time.

It started out the way a lot of things had been starting since Carla first hit on the both of them - by Carla asking a very invasive twin question and Stanley being very determined to give her an answer.
"If you're identical does that mean you're identical down there too?" She had asked, and Ford had immediately said that theoretically, yes they would be, but no, that wasn't good enough for Stanley. Stanley laughed himself red in the face, said something about how maybe one of them was bigger, called her a baby cow as a term of endearment and then walked straight into a locker. Ford wasn't even sure exactly why Stanley needed to confirm it, he wouldn't be able to say a thing about it to her without throwing up anyway, but whenever it was just the two of them Stanley regained his ability to speak coherently specifically to nag Ford. He had done it their entire walk home and he was continuing while Ford was trying to do their homework.
(Or: One of Stan's greatest shames is his small p(hinger prints))

In other words, Ford has wanted Stan for too long. It is time to take matters into his own hands and rectify the situation, even if it means having to alter his own brother's memories.

Summary
Ford didn't mean to trip inside of Stan's fantasy bubble, the fantasies he's kept hidden in the mindscape. All of his voyeurs, his travels, his notes; all of it was for research! Only because Stan is too stubborn to open up to him, despite their reconciliation!
He doesn't mind that the sexual fantasies, the one kept at the very back of halls, consisted of him. Of Ford Pines. And it seems that the mindscape doesn't mind Ford's intrusion, allowing the fantasy to play as if nothing happened. So if Ford were to play along as well... it's not so bad, is it?
After all, he isn't Ford Pines, Stanley's brother. He's now Ford the scientist. The Ford in Stan's fantasy. The Ford Stanley wants him to be.
