euijoo notices it a few nights later.
not all at once, not in a dramatic way, just in pieces, the way you notice a room getting colder without remembering when the window was opened. it’s in the way nicholas looks at him now, longer, slower, like he’s waiting for something to finish forming; it’s in the way his attention doesn’t drift anymore, it stays put, then lingers.
they’re sitting on the hood of the car this time, engine still warm beneath them. the city is quieter here, like it gave up trying to be impressive. euijoo has nicholas’s lighter again. no one comments on how that keeps happening.
the flame jumps, nicholas watches.
euijoo flicks it shut, then open again. he doesn’t look at nicholas while he does it, but he feels the weight of the gaze anyway. it presses against his shoulder blades, familiar now.
he smiles a little.
“what?” euijoo asks, finally turning his head.
nicholas looks away too quickly. “nothing.”
that’s when euijoo knows.
