“This is nice,” Yoonchae murmurs. Megan leans her head on Yoonchae’s shoulder, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling the couch blanket tighter over them. A glass of Shirley Temple sits on the coffee table between them, condensation beading on the glass, the maraschino cherry still untouched.
“Yeah,” Megan says, her voice a little nervous, reasonable given what she’s about to do next. She carefully removes her arm, reaching into her pocket for the small brown package she’d brought specifically for this trip.
Yoonchae glances down, curious. Inside the package is a tiny, dried piece of mistletoe, a red bow tied neatly at the top, the Trader Joe’s logo printed boldly on the front. Megan pulls it out, holding it up awkwardly.
“Um. So like, you don’t have to, and I know it’s probably cheesy, but around Christmas, people usually—”
Yoonchae cuts her off, lifting a hand to cup Megan’s jaw. Her cheeks are flushed, and her eyes keep flicking to Megan’s lips.
“I know what it’s for,” she whispers. “Sophia told me.”
Megan laughs softly, shakily holding the mistletoe above them. Yoonchae leans in, and finally, finally, they kiss.

Summary
Two friends spend time on the shores of Honolulu, taking in the night sky. Mark, a young boy who has felt distant from those close to him since his father died in a plane crash, and his friend Alex, a Filipino girl starting anew in Hawaii after a natural disaster drove her from her home. As the two share a moment, a brilliant display of spaceborne warfare interrupts them. As a U.S. Space Force orbital gunship and a Chinese combat spacecraft duke it out above their heads, Alex watches the display with amazement, but it touches Mark on a deeper level. Buck hadn’t set foot in Oahu in over 10 years, but as he steps off the charter boat and feels the sun on his skin and smells the salt from the water in the air- he doesn’t know why he even left. Stepping onto the platform, duffel slung low on one shoulder, he takes a moment to just take in his surroundings. The sun was bright and burning, yet too soft. Nothing could ever compare to the burning feeling in his leg as the ladder truck was lifted off of it. Nothing here would ever hit as hard as Los Angeles.
Not after the bombing.
Not after Eddie’s fist connected with his jaw and the silence and emptiness that followed, draping over him like a curtain- or more accurately a tsunami slamming him into the concrete. Fast, unexpected, and oh- so harsh.
And so he left.
Packed everything he needed and sold the rest. Left detailed instructions to Maddie for her to sell the loft and for nostalgia's sake an L.A. postcard telling her he loved her and a number of an old friend in case of emergencies. He knew she would understand- as a Buckley, when things get bad you pack up and start over.
Buck wasn’t running, not really.
He just needed to start over.

Fushiguro Megumi has never really been one for romance.
