Gale was slipping away.
He'd made it, he'd managed to get back to his classes, and he was still slipping away from John. Eating less, sleeping less, falling apart at the seams. John could hardly bear to watch it. Worst of all, after all they've been through, he can't risk further alienating Gale by judging him unable.
One snowy night, though, a reckoning comes. John brings Gale home. But limitations are limitations - and sometimes they can't be overcome the way we so desire.

He had felt fine all day, barring the headache — but that was a constant that he rarely thought about, swallowing fistfuls of ibuprofen whenever the pain made his eyes water. Tony had left Stark Industries, Pepper’s perfume swirling around him, grinning to himself as he allowed himself to relive the past hour he had spent in Pepper’s office, with her spread out underneath him on her couch. Now that she’s CEO, Tony had offered his services for stress relief, delighted when she had actually taken him up on it (several times now). He had made his way to his Audi with a literal spring in his step, making a list of all the ingredients he would need to pick up for tonight’s dinner, having finally settled on an entry from Maria Stark’s overflowing recipe book. As he slid behind the steering wheel, his hands had clapped to the sides of his head, a strained scream leaving him, his fingers digging into his scalp as he struggled to hold his head together while it was split in two.

“Oh, God,” he says, his voice almost unintelligible — it sounds like gears grating together, and his right hand presses hard against his throat. His panic over the state of his right eye is dwarfed by the panic that rises in him at the feeling of metal against his throat — metal, instead of the callused skin of his palm. The vitals monitor starts to chime shrilly, his heart rate climbing, as Tony attempts to burrow the fingers of his left hand underneath the panels of the suit gauntlet covering his right arm. Blood streams down the gauntlet as he frantically attempts to wrench his right arm free, the skin and delicate muscles of his fingers shredded by the metal panels. Tony is so intent on removing the gauntlet, sweat beading on his forehead, his teeth gritted together, the whites of his eyes flashing as his eyes roll madly — that he doesn’t feel the pinch of the needle as it is inserted into the base of his neck, the plunger of the syringe is depressed, and Tony falls limply back against the bed.
against all odds, tony stark survives using the infinity stones — but, god, he wishes he hadn't.
