    Gaius took the weight from him, his eyes settling on him heavily. “You know the boy can’t stay. It’s not safe,” he said, but the tone of his voice made it obvious he already knew what Merlin’s answer would be.

    Merlin held his gaze; it was the least Gaius deserved for being dragged into this mess. Taking a steadying breath, he forced himself to bring out the frightening words.

    “We’re leaving, him and I, overmorrow at dawn before the knights on night-patrol change shifts with the morning ones; they’ll be tired and easier to distract then,” he affirmed solemnly.
