she nodded.
wednesday watched her under the darkness. “if things had gone differently, yes, i would have,” she said. one of her hands lifted into the air and reached forward. enid’s eyes fluttered when that hand gently tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear, and she leaned into the palm that subsequently cradled her face.
enid brings up a bittersweet subject to wednesday: they never got to go to prom together. fortunately for enid, her girlfriend never does anything by halves.

enid stared at the smudged blood lining the dips in her skin before lifting her eyes back to wednesday.
her voice was rough, so unlike her, when she said, “do you feel guilty?” she lifted her hand, turning her palm to face wednesday. the blood glinted on her fingertips, glinted from light that didn’t exist in this reality naturally.
enid didn’t give wednesday the chance to reply before she stalked forward. her eyes narrowed, a grueling accomplice to the ever-present sneer upticking her lips.
“do you feel guilty?” enid repeated gravelly.
wednesday’s in a coma, but she doesn’t know.
in the midst of her oblivion, she continually finds herself in the graveyard from her vision. worse yet, she’s not alone. enid, intent on reminding her of her guilt, is always there—and she’s got a thirst for vengeance.

six years ago, enid was pulled out of nevermore after making the worst mistakes of her life. she and wednesday haven’t seen each other since.
the last thing either of them expect is to meet again in a city on the east coast.
enid needs a place to stay. wednesday needs someone to interview for a class project. with an unremedied past and things left unsaid between them, it’s likely to be difficult. they discover it’s quite the opposite—it’s almost too easy to become a part of each other’s lives again.

there was something almost poetic about the way it disappeared. it sated itself with the mere act of existing. enid would admire it, perhaps even envy it, if existing was something she desired.
instead, enid admired those swans she had once read about, the ones that soared high and let themselves fall without flying. she doubted that story was true, but the idea sounded nice.
enid wants to die.
it’s not some grand admission. it’s just the truth. a three-week spring break trip with wednesday to new jersey lets her think about the present, the past, and maybe even the future.

enid slid her gaze over the cuts, the bruises, and the battered canvas of her best friend’s exterior, and she willed her lip to stop quivering. she followed the line of the iv in wednesday’s hand back to the bag it dripped from, and that will grew tenfold.

Wednesday.
She didn't know much, but this... word... rang out in her head. It was the name that sprang to mind when she saw the dark figure approaching her—dark coat, twin braids, fierce eyes. Wednesday.
The girl—Wednesday—spotted her, and her face broke into undisguised relief. "Enid..."
And she felt her mouth move of its own accord, stretching out vocal cords that were scratchy from disuse, simply to voice out one question.
