Summary
“Is there a reason you never want to spend your ruts with me?” Neuvillette asks, so direct that he catches Wriothesley utterly off guard. “Is there some fault with me?” Neuvillette asks softly.
Wriothesley’s head snaps back up. “No,” he says. “No, Neuvillette, not at all. It’s… a fault with me.” He rubs his jaw, forcing himself to meet Neuvillette’s eyes even though he wants, very badly, to look anywhere else. “I’m not… When I’m in rut, it’s…” He drives both hands into his hair, holding it back from his face and closing his eyes. “I’m not good,” he finally says, dropping his hands and hanging his head.
Wriothesley has always struggled through his ruts alone, terrified he will hurt a partner, but Neuvillette refuses to let him suffer alone.

Summary
After a fight, Alhaitham has a nightmare where he loses Kaveh entirely. Waking brings no relief - only a fear he can't shake, pushing him toward Kaveh's door while praying he hasn't already gone too far.
Instantly withdrawn, Kaveh rose to his feet, silently gathered his blueprints, and turned his back. Dragging a hand over his face, Alhaitham reached for the gentler words he should’ve used in the first place to try and undo the damage - but Kaveh cut him off with a quiet 'leave me alone' and retreated into his bedroom without a backward glance.
It hadn’t even been an insult, but it was somehow all the more piercing for its bare simplicity. In one solitary sentence, Alhaitham heard the echo of every fear he carried about himself - incapable of the softness required to hold something as bright as Kaveh’s trust without breaking it into pieces.

Summary
“Hello, you two,” the vendor greets them as he tends to his food. His eyes are kind. Brown as chocolate.
“Two, please,” Al-Haitham says.
Kaveh spaces out, looking at the floor. This is a normal interaction. It’s normal for two men to get food together. It’s something friends do. This doesn’t have to be a big deal.
“Will that be together?”
Kaveh’s head snaps up.
“No!” he says too quickly, too loudly. The market isn’t quiet, but the word feels deafening in his ears. “We aren’t, we aren’t anything.” His voice comes out weak, like he knows the words were never meant to be spoken.
“Okay,” says the vendor, lifting his eyebrows as he goes back to preparing the food. “I meant as in paying.”
Or: It seems like everyone in Sumeru has something to say about what Al-Haitham and Kaveh are to each other. All Kaveh wants is to have control over his own story.
