It's been four days since Matthew disappeared; three days since Mary gave birth to little, precious George and kissed her husband for the last time before the police found his car — or rather what was left of it — burning in a ditch at the edge of town. Despite their best effort to put out the fire and rummage through the heaps of charred carrosserie, there was no body to be recovered nor bones to be unveiled from amidst the ashes. Not even the search parties that scoured the surrounding fields and forests managed to find any trace of where he might have gone if he had indeed survived the crash. Matthew's body seemed to have been swallowed whole by the muddy ground underneath.
OR;
Mary mourns, but Matthew survives despite it all.

What exactly did he come here to do? He could have gone on with his life and never thought about the man in front of him again, but somehow he just couldn’t shake off the urge to see him again.
“You came to stand in my office and stare at me?” he offers half-heartedly, but the joke comes out more strained than anything.
“No! God, sorry, I probably look like a major weirdo right now, but I came here to… apologise.” An apology. He’s good at those, so it feels like a safe choice.
