“It’s weird, you know? To feel something and be told you don’t actually feel it.”

“To believe them over your own body,” the Inquisitor murmurs.

“To have no choice either way,” Dorian finishes.

“Didn’t you once tell me you’d rather be mauled to death by feral dogs than go back to Ventus?”

“Yes, but my sister is getting married so I’m going to be an adult and suck it up for 48 hours.” He turns to Ashur, hooks a finger over his collar, and tugs him into a soft kiss before he can put his mask back on. “Pack comfortable shoes."

Or: Ashur discovers the secret world of banana piracy, attends a Soporati rager, and climbs Tarquin's bell tower.

    Summary

The moment he rounds the corner, he knows he’s made a terrible mistake. There are five of them, and they’re not even Threads but rather heavily armed mercenaries, and now they all turn to face the drunk lunatic with the shiny sword careening toward them from up the street. Confusion reigns for a precious second or two, and Tarquin takes this time to evaluate all the decisions he’s made in his life that have led him to this point. He finds them all sadly wanting, and then he trips and launches himself face-first at his nearest opponent.

Or: Tarquin is the last one to learn about Ashur's day job. He makes a few bad decisions.

    Summary

Modern/Mundane AU in which the Shadow Dragons are a volunteer lifeboat crew in the busy fishing village of Dock Town on the island state of Minrathous. Tarquin and Ashur are frequently thrown in life and death situations together and then go back to their day jobs like nothing happened. In real life, they’re a world apart – Ashur the local vicar and councillor and Tarquin a bitter ex-soldier pulling pints in a pub – but when they’re at sea, they’re equals.

When the crew lose a young life out at sea, Tarquin distances himself from the others, shouldering the blame for the kid’s death, but Ashur won’t let him carry the burden alone.

This is my absolute favorite Tarquin/Viper fic--it might be my fav Tarquin fic.

You know when you put down a really good book and mourn that it's over? Then proceed to reread your favorite bits here and there just to let yourself down gently? Yeah, I was very emotionally invested in these guys.

I don't filter for modern AUs, but will read them when they pop up. Turbulent Waters is one of the best, if not best, modern AUs of Veilguard
