    Bookmarker's Notes

One of my favourite works of all time and perhaps the best work in the TF2 fandom (at least out of everything I've ever read).

Not only does this portray impeccable insight into both Pyro's and Engie's backstory, it also does that in a very grounded, realistic way. Pyro's gender is left ambiguous/non-binary in a way that doesn't feel out of place for the timeframe which I just love to see. Overall the writing is just chef's kiss; amazing parallels, things left ambiguous, Pyro's perspective really feeling like Pyro's eyes.

I will always, with overwhelming joy, come back to this. This is really showing how far fanfiction can take you from a literary/writing standpoint. Impeccable.

    Summary

Sleep. He can't. It’s Thursday and the last time he slept more than an hour without violently thrashing was (probably?) three days ago, and he can't let Phoenix see him like this. He knows he will do everything to comfort him and the image makes him shudder; he’d rather die than be subjected to this; he’d rather die than subject Phoenix to this. But it was not the first time he’d been asked and he knew he couldn't hide forever, as enticing as it was; Phoenix is nothing if not persistent and yet still so kind about it and Miles wishes he were someone else who deserved it. He’s about to politely decline just as Phoenix says, “I have the new Steel Samurai movie that you have to watch with me,” and he’s clearly a weaker man than he thought. He feels like a guillotine is about to sever his neck from the body as he says, “You're playing dirty, Wright,” and Wright is fist bumping the air as if he’s done anything other than the bare minimum. He looks at him and he thinks, why why why.

JOY to dissect. I'm running out of summaries/recs for parasitefever's fics. Angst (my favorite), Miles being horrible at everything (he needs to die), Phoenix being way too forgiving (also needs to die). Last 3 paragraphs hit me like a train, insane.

    Summary

He spent the whole day curled up on the bed, methodically sorting the letters by date. Then, when he was done, he started again, this time sorting them by topic—Phoenix had a lot to say. School, Larry, the Signal Samurai, Miles, theater, Miles, school, Miles Miles Miles Miles— He gave up when he realized all of the letters could be put in a single impressive pile.

On the third day his stomach refused to digest any more Absolut. He didn't feel any better, his mind wasn't any clearer, and the letters kept blurring, and he couldn't remember anymore if Phoenix had broken his arm before or after he had chipped his tooth. His heart thumped in his chest as he started sorting again, simple—read and unread. There had to be an answer and he knew he would eventually find it—if only he committed every detail of Phoenix’s life to memory the same way Phoenix had done to him over the years maybe he too would know what to do. He wondered, if Phoenix’s job was to save me, what is mine?

If Phoenix had been there, would I have let him save me?

    Bookmarker's Notes

Beautiful work with very well done integration of letters. As always well done characterization that is seen not just in dialogue but entirety of the style of writing itself.

    Summary

The first dream he’d had after the trial had not been about his father. The familiar scene taken away from him, like the sounds of his native language, the smell of the classroom, the comforting shine of his favorite action figure—gone, the moment he’d become used to it. Instead: the couch in his house, which he barely ever used, his body not even making a dent in the shiny leather. On the table, a bottle of pills. The good kind, the one he’d had to humiliate himself for at the psychiatrist’s office. There hadn't been a gun in sight, and he knew he could do it now.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Wonderful depiction of suicidal ideation/actual attempt, all the shame and guilt centering it, and how living daily in a tragic state takes away your normalcy in public. Very grounded, realistic work with some poetic gems sprinkled in if you look hard enough.
