“No!” Ed screams instinctively. He doesn’t know what’s happened, but he knows he’s heard a gunshot, and he knows Stede’s hands are slipping out of his, and he knows, a second later, that Stede’s let go of the railing to fall into the sea below.
Somebody grabs onto Ed’s shoulder, but he wrenches them off of him without a second thought. He wrestles his boots off, then his weapons, but he doesn’t care to tear off anything else— there isn’t time for it, not now, not when—
“Captain, don’t!” Frenchie shouts behind him.
Ed ignores him. The Revenge doesn’t have a captain if Stede Bonnet’s not on board.

Summary
The first time it happens, Ed doesn’t say anything. It’s a normal day. Boring. Maybe he has a hangover, maybe it’s time to stop getting black-out drunk the night before work. But it’s been a while since he’s gotten into trouble for it. He doesn’t have as much to be angry about these days, not anymore. Depressed? Possibly. Feeling like he’s wasted his life? Oh, absolutely, that’s just a fact. He’s 45 years old and working in a dingy, dusty strip mall, living vicariously (at the moment) through a man in a $3000 bespoke suit taking a sledgehammer to a microwave.

Stede had been cataloguing all of the books that their newest raid had to offer, expecting it to be Edward when a British Naval officer walked in.
Finding him passed out and covered in blood, Ed makes sure to take care of Stede without showing how worried he had become. One fatal flaw though, Stede noticed.

Stede doesn’t even know what these people want.
They tell him they’re mad at Ed, but they’re not asking him anything. There are no questions, no requests, no threats for information. It becomes increasingly clear to Stede that this may not be a trap at all, but perhaps a punishment, and that makes his blood run cold in a way he doesn’t like all that much.
It may be that they haven’t tried contacting Ed at all. He might not even know where Stede is. He’s got to know he’s missing, but— Stede’s not even sure how much time has passed.
Usually, he can get out of this.

Something isn't right…
Stede knows this feeling. This floating, foggy feeling that fills his mind whenever it so pleases. He can't remember when it started, but he dreads it each time it approaches him. It fills him with a vulnerability he'd hoped to have left behind in childhood. That overwhelming feeling of helplessness, as if he were a frightened child, consumes him.
