Summary
For a second, Eddie switched sides. He thought about how he’d feel if Buck had been the one trapped down there. He would’ve been livid, but even more so, he would’ve been petrified. Even the idea of losing Buck was overwhelmingly unnerving. He couldn’t imagine one day without him, let alone a whole lifetime.
Buck checked in with Eddie, but Eddie should’ve checked in with Buck. He’d been so set on moving forward that he left his closest friend behind.
—
Or the one where Eddie opens his door and finds Buck, who is clearly overwhelmed and still afraid. Set shortly after 3x15.

Summary
“She defended herself,” Buck started, beginning to fidget with his hands. He could feel Eddie’s eyes shift to them. “Said she did what she had to.”
Eddie moved a little closer. Buck couldn’t get himself to look up.
“You know that’s bullshit, right?” Eddie countered, sounding much too confident. “We’ve talked about this. She was in the wrong, Buck. Completely.”

Summary
He wished he could obliterate his sensitive side, but therapy wouldn’t alter that either. Through his sessions, he was taught how to better manage his anxiety, but he’d never be able to stop it from rising in the first place. It was as automatic as waking up every morning. The only thing he could do was accept his feelings and learn how to live beside them.
So to him, when he walked into the fire station and saw Eddie kissing some girl, losing the ability to breathe made perfect sense. Everything around him fell away, leaving only his best friend and his new love interest. His heavy responses to stress weren’t welcome, but at least Buck understood them. At least he knew to expect them.

Or the one where Buck walks in on Eddie kissing Ana at the station, and he somehow ends up in Bobby's office after. Set sometime after 4x06.

Summary
Eddie still couldn’t wrap his head around his boys being at the beach during the tsunami. Buck said they were going out, but the Santa Monica Pier was one choice out of thousands. The likelihood of them being there had been incredibly low, so Eddie hadn’t worried about it.
He should’ve.
The entire day, he thought they were perfectly safe. He never would’ve guessed they were outside, fighting for their lives in different places. The idea of both of them out there, scared and alone, desperate to find each other…
It left him breathless in the worst way.
—
Or the one where Buck doesn't answer his phone the morning after the tsunami, and Eddie decides to go to his apartment uninvited. Alternate ending to 3x03.

Summary
Even though he knew who was there and who wasn’t, Eddie took another look. Considering how blurry his vision was, they probably had him on something strong. Maybe he missed Buck somehow.
He hadn’t.
Ana squeezed his hand. “What is it? What do you need?”
He should’ve needed her, but Eddie didn’t even want her in the room. She wasn’t the one who’d witnessed everything go down. She wasn’t the one who watched him the entire time, carrying the same blank expression he’d been wearing.
“—Buck?” he choked out.
—
Or the one where Eddie wakes up in the hospital, and the only person he is interested in seeing is Buck. Set after 4x13.

Summary
“Buck?” A calm, but clearly concerned voice rang from the bottom of the ladder. “You good?”
Against his better judgement, Buck looked down. Of course, it had to be Eddie. They were cool with each other now but out of everyone, he still got on his nerves the most.
“I’m great,” Buck chided, offering a tight smile. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Eddie stared at him, raising an eyebrow. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because the entire team just watched you make-out with a bowling ball… and you’re bleeding.”
—
Or the one where Buck earns himself a concussion, and Eddie acts like someone who's in love. Set during season two.

Summary
“Okay, tell me about it. What happened in this nightmare?”
Buck breathed in, then shakily breathed out. Eddie reached for him, resting his hand over his thigh. It wasn’t his usual point of contact, but it was comforting. He was safe with Eddie.
“It… was about the shooting.” Buck could see the way Eddie’s muscles just barely tensed up. He was already coming up with another apology. How many did he owe him now, two? Three?
Eddie didn’t tell him to stop. He didn’t say anything at all, which meant he was waiting for Buck again.
Buck hesitantly continued. “I had to keep looking at you,” he whispered, his throat suddenly dry. “Because you were looking at me.”
—
Or the one where Buck wakes up at the firehouse from a nightmare, and Eddie is the one they send to help him. Set a few months after 4x13.

Summary
Someone tried to pull Eddie off. “No!” he shouted, shaking his head. Tears blurred his vision as he repeatedly pressed on Buck’s chest. “He needs me in there!”
Either no one believed him or no one cared. They didn’t listen to him. Hen, Bobby, and Chim used all their strength to force him away. “Buck!” Eddie screamed out, desperately thrashing against their grasps. He knew they weren’t allowed past the surgery doors, but he didn’t care. Not when Buck was behind them.
“Buck!” Eddie didn’t want to let up, but the adrenaline in his system was on its way out. He didn’t have enough strength to overpower all three of them. A defeated, choked-off sob left his lips and he stopped, his hands weakly shooting up to Bobby’s arms.
His legs gave up on trying to support him. Hen and Chim let him go as Bobby lowered him down, his arms still around Eddie’s front.
Eddie could faintly hear Bobby trying to comfort him, but none of his words caught. All he could focus on was his own voice as it painfully begged for Buck’s life over and over again.

Summary
Eddie didn’t realize he was daydreaming until his radio beeped. Eddie waited for someone to say something, but nothing came. Confused, he looked back up.
Buck was in the middle of the ladder, seemingly glued to the rung he was on. For the first few seconds, Eddie didn’t think anything of it. He figured he needed to catch his breath; it was a far climb.
But then more time passed, and his radio clicked again, and Buck still wasn’t moving or talking. Eddie turned towards the rest of the team, realizing they were as concerned as he was. Not good.
Eddie turned back, clicking his radio on. “Everything okay up there, Buckley?”
The other line beeped. “Yeah,” Buck answered, his voice strained. “Just need a second.”
Eddie frowned, unhappy with his response. He didn’t sound okay. Someone who wasn’t okay didn’t belong on a hundred-foot ladder.

Summary
Ali happily held out her hand to Ana. “May I have this pleasure?”
Ana was taken by surprise, but she lit up. She clearly didn’t mind being asked. “Please.” After giving Eddie a silly grin, she followed Ali out to the dance floor.
For the first time that night, it was just Buck and Eddie. Buck watched them walk off together as Eddie moved beside him, only having one thought on his mind. It was a risky move when his fiancée was a few feet away, but he couldn’t help himself.
When Buck turned his way, Eddie’s heart soared. He held out his hand. “Shall we?”

Summary
It was Eddie’s turn to cut her off. “No. Buck wouldn’t do that,” Eddie rushed out. A new wave of nausea was making his throat tingle. “He wouldn’t.”
“Wouldn’t he?” Maddie’s voice was practically inaudible.
Eddie desperately sifted through his memories, looking for answers. Almost right away, he could list several occasions Buck put himself on the line. He knew about the time he recklessly crashed on his motorcycle, and he always took risks on the job. Buck never valued his life the way Eddie did.
Maddie was right. It wasn’t Buck’s first attempt. Eddie wasn’t even sure if it was his second, third, or fourth.
“Wait—” Eddie took a breath, trying so hard not to lose his mind. “You said it was three weeks ago. Why are you just telling me now?”
“He didn’t tell me,” Maddie added. He could tell she was crying now.
Eddie’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. “He didn’t—”
“He didn’t tell anyone, Eddie."

Summary
“Why are you acting like this isn’t a big deal?” His voice was raised, but he wasn’t yelling. “Buck, you have been living out of a storage unit for weeks! You’re in pain, you’re hungry, and you’re— You’re homeless. You have no home."
Eddie had such a way with words. You have no home. Very nice of him.
“What do you want me to do, Eddie?” He put the measuring cup down with enough force that it bounced to the floor. “Breakdown and cry? Get on my knees and beg someone for a loan? I took what I could.”
“No, you didn’t.” Eddie’s cursed index finger came up, pointing right at Buck’s chest. “Because you didn’t tell anyone! We would’ve helped you. I would’ve helped you.”
“I don’t want anyone’s help,” Buck pressed. “I got myself into this situation, and I can get myself out. I always do.”
Eddie held both his hands up, but they dropped as something dawned on him. Misery flooded his features. “You took over my lease.”
The last thing Buck wanted to do was make Eddie feel guilty. His decisions put him where he was— Nobody else’s. Still, his head fell. “Yeah, Eddie. I did.”

Or the one where Buck has no choice but to move into a storage unit, and Eddie finds out.

Summary
“You can’t be here,” Buck continued quietly. “Am I seeing things again?”
Again? Eddie forced himself to push all of his anger to the side. It wasn’t what Buck needed. He took another look around, eyeing several empty syringes littering the ground. Given how tall and strong Buck was, drugs were probably the only way they could keep him restrained. Bile threatened to pass Eddie’s throat, but he was quick to swallow it down.
Also, dead? Why did Buck think Eddie was dead? Did his kidnapper convince him? Was it because he was unconscious after the accident? He didn’t know if Buck had been awake at all, but he would’ve checked his pulse if he had been.
Buck filled the silence between them. “I promise I’ve been fighting,” he murmured. “For Chris. I know he needs me. I’m trying to get home to him. I just needed some sleep, I think.”
