He'd pretty much given up on painkillers. Acetaminophen had never worked for him and ibuprofen had quickly lost effectiveness, so when he found himself popping more than the recommended safe amount, he gave up on it. It really wasn't cutting it anyway and he couldn't afford to fuck up his liver as an athlete.
There was the standard general soreness that really never went away even after he'd stopped growing. But sometimes things just… got worse. After a race his wrists would hurt for hours. It always felt like they'd been wrenched but that didn't make sense. No amount of strength training he did did anything to help. Sometimes he just woke up wrong and his joints would just be agonizing. It felt like someone had shoved a sheet of metal in the joint. It burned and throbbed and felt like things were out of place even when they weren't. Sometimes it made sense, like after he did a particularly tough race, but other times it just… hit him. He couldn't explain it.
