He's a symptom. The thing he's a symptom of has been asleep at the bottom of the building since 1972, and when it finally sits up it counts twelve people in the ring, calls that a solid number, and asks whether they're all enjoying the planet.
Rafael has spent five years learning to live with a diagnosis. He's about to be told that the man he's been his whole life was a cover story, that the household is standard-issue anatomy where his lodger comes from, and that something has been running a search pattern across his ceiling for a month.
