Rio’s reaction was immediate and visceral. Agatha swallowed hard. Her throat felt thick, blocked, like her body might refuse to let words out altogether. “I know, my love,” she managed, steady only by force of habit. “We want you to go home too.”
The door clicked open before she could say another word.
Dr. Belova entered quietly, not her usual bustling stride, not the calm-but-efficient gait she’d perfected after years in oncology. Today she walked like someone carrying an invisible weight. Like someone who dreaded every footstep closer to the bed.

As she heads for the cooler without a word, Rio can see the criss-crossed ties forming three perfect bows across her bare back.
