Kindness. Cid was not so delicate with his approach the first time, but here he is…unbearably generous. It all makes Clive want to shatter into pieces. Clive opens his mouth to speak, but he finds himself unable to give sound to the words trapped in his throat.

There’s a flash of blue in the air, and he throws his hands out just in time to catch the crystal. He blinks down at it, and then at Clive.
“It looks half-used already,” Clive says, starting off down the darkened corridor again. “With the way you smoke, you’ll need another before long.”
Clive had spotted it when Cid hadn’t, and he had no obligation to hand it over but he’d done so anyway. Cid hadn’t even known he’d been watching closely enough to know he needed another, nor does Clive question why he uses a crystal more than his own aether. Unnecessarily thoughtful, and it stuns him into silence.
Just another little part of himself that he’s allowed to shine through.
Cid smirks at the crystal, battered and near-useless thing that it is, and tucks it into his breast pocket alongside the tin of cigars. “Thank you, Clive.”
Clive is five paces ahead of him already, Torgal at his heels, and he grunts in assent. Still disapproving of the habit but compromising all the same, and Cid realises he’s quickly becoming quite fond of him.

Cid has always thought the romantic tales of souls switching to be overblown nonsense, not least because he’s seen it go bad so many times. Waking up as a Bearer in service to the Holy Empire of Sanbreque doesn’t seem likely to change his mind – especially not when he learns what, exactly, four Bearers are doing in the woods not far from Waloed’s camp.
Clive, meanwhile, hasn’t thought much at all about such things in the five years since the burning of Phoenix Gate. As far as he’s concerned, a switch with Waloed’s Lord Commander is just one more hardship that he needs to survive long enough to track down his brother’s killer and take his revenge.
Neither of them expect this switch to end well. Both of them, of course, are wrong.
