Shiro didn't make good on his promise to never give up on Keith, Instead just as most of the other adults in Keith's life he failed him not knowing it would lead to a series of disastrous outcomes
OR
Shiro abandoned Keith early on causing him to be booted from there Garrison. Shiro lives regretting this decision and when the Galran Empire captures him and his team on Kerberos they use this to their advantage and find Keith to make him the ultimate warrior to fight Shiro who they now call 'The Champion.' Haggar and Zarkon however don't know that the little game they've made could be the end or new beginning of their empire.
They've created the Star Killer, and soon no one will know what to do with him.

Shiro Abandoned Keith early on at the Garrison, Keith leaves the Garrison early. On his own accord because he doesn't think he can do this. Everything else goes the same. Until haggar is going through Shiro's memories and sees Keith. She's not sure what makes her do it, But Something about him is special. She sends a team to kidnap 17 year old Keith and bring him to her. She trains him to be the perfect warrior to fight alongside the champion. Only Shiro escapes before the two can meet again. When He escapes it leaves a space in the empire for a new Champion. For someone else to rise in the ranks.
And take down the one person that ruined his life.

However, when the territory of thayserix was obliterated and turned into a winter wasteland, the rest of terra was forced to come to terms with the horrifying message left behind by the gates of thayserix. in front of the gates lay the prince of thayserix on a cross, upside down. His body was nailed to the cross through his feet and hands, his face holding a terror-stricken expression as blood dripped down through his mouth. A piece of paper was nailed to the prince's stomach.
A simple stanza. A simple message that turned the tides on Terra.
