Arthur makes a noise of protest but Merlin shushes him. “I know you don’t trust me anymore but I will make everything right.” Merlin vows.
The sorcerer truly means this, Arthur knows. Sincerity is practically dripping from every word. It’s such a Merlin thing to promise, with that earnest and determined tone. It only scares Arthur more.

I am trying my best to stay on track with what actually happens in Merlin. However, there are *huge* empty spaces in-between seasons and episodes that I cannot, as a singular human, fill properly. Expect divergence from the canonical plot, including and not limited to Lancelot being alive (because I started writing without watching Merlin for a while and—hoo boy, the death of Lancelot is earlier than I thought).

He wanted to take his hand and lead him through the fields back to Camelot, pull him through markets where sorcerers now plied their trades freely, to show him how Arthur had expressed his love.
He wanted to dig down with his bare hands, dirt caking his hands and under his fingernails, to cradle Merlin’s skull in his hands, to have some part of him back. He would even take the smallest toe bone if it was the only thing left, close his hand around that tiny fragment, just to have something to hold.

“Sir Leon,” Emil said, brushing a lock of dirty blond hair out of his face and crossing his arms over his raised knees. “I was wondering if I might ask you a question.”
Leon turned slightly so he was facing the young knight. “What is it?”
Emil hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Why does King Arthur do the cooking? Surely one of us should be doing it instead? Or a servant could have been brought along to do that sort of work?”
Despite Emil’s hushed voice, his words seemed to echo around their small camp.
“Arthur doesn’t bring servants on quests,” Leon said in a careful whisper, eyeing the king from his place on the dirt floor. “Not anymore.”
