If I want to be cheered up after a long day, this tends to be the fic I go to. The rough premise, that Foggy is not even remotely Matt's usual type but Matt goes for him anyway and finds he likes all the things that originally gave him pause, is a common romantic trope, but I've rarely seen it pulled off this well. Usually it seems a bit out of left field, but here we get to see all the reasons why Matt might fall in love with Foggy without their history, and I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for Matt and his many, many insecurities. I like the slow evolution of Matt's feelings here, as he comes to realise that there's more to Foggy than he initially presumed, and how the motif of sweetness ties the whole thing together. I will admit, I'm kind of interested in what happened next, how long it takes them to leave Landman and Zack now they're together and how the whole thing with Fisk plays out in a world where Matt has someone who knows about and supports his nocturnal activities from the start. But, at the end of the day, this is a wonderful little self-contained story just as it is, and the perfect antidote to winter depression.

If it's been written by x_los, then it is probably painfully, heart-stoppingly brilliant, and probably going to hurt you in various complicated, horrible ways that you will nonetheless thoroughly enjoy. This is true of pretty much all their works...but I have to admit, this one is a particular favourite. Part of that is that you so rarely see Chrestomanci fusions (seriously, I want more Chrestomanci fusions), and the other part is that they get across the world and the atmosphere and the details of Series Twelve so beautifully, while having an equally perfect grip on the Blakeverse. The details of the hardship of life in Series One, even little things like Avon having never seen or tasted proper toast before, are wonderful, as is the way Avon and Aven interact when they're finally forced into contact with one another. And there's religion and social commentary and depth to everything, so that I'm forever looking up references and feeling utterly humbled and despairing in my own ability to write anything even remotely as good. I like the way the original Chrestomanci and Howl canons are worked in as history, and all the ways in which this affects people. And I liked matching up all the Chrestomanciverse versions of Blakeverse characters (I've still got hopes of seeing the local Servalan and Travis in the third instalment), and working out all the little details put into their characterisation. I'm looking forward to seeing them interact with their canon counterparts in the future.
