Upon returning from a harrowing mission, Kakashi finds Naruto injured in his crib at the orphanage he was sent to. It's the last straw--just one of a dozen different ways the village has failed Naruto--and Kakashi makes the impulsive decision to take the boy and run. Injured from his own previous mission and with no real plan in mind, Kakashi knows it will take a miracle for them to survive, especially since it's only a matter of time before Konoha sends someone to track them down.

The Umino clan is from Uzushiogakure, just like the Uzumakis; they came to Konoha to protect the few remaining Uzumakis, as the servant family with strong and bone-deep loyalty relations to the Uzumaki.
Decades later, Iruka as the last remaining member of the only other clan with a long history of seals, must decode the few remaining Uzushio scrolls to help the ANBU Hound get out of a career-ending jutsu.
Iruka thinks the third has finally gone senile. Kakashi thinks this is all very (not) funny. Naruto is just happy that his teacher and favorite anbu are getting along.

Summary
Hatake Kakashi is an alpha Shinobi who has accomplished beyond his years. His failures are few but great in weight. Iruka left active duty years ago, staying comfortably in his Chunin rank to support the village from within. After a troubled childhood that left him out in the cold, he turned his poor coping choices inward and worked on crafting the perfect omega persona. A golden Academy teacher beloved by students and parents. A busy worker inside the Hokage tower, respected for his efficiency and Take No Shit attitude. A seal master who spends summer breaks crafting porcelain masks below ground.
When both have cast aside romance with apathy or rage, the simple scents of Lavender and Bergamont are the deciding factor.
Kakashi is left with another failure on his hands, dragging another good soul down with him. Iruka is panicking as his careful facade is pulled away.

To make matters worse, instead of blending in as he hoped, he somehow managed to draw attention to himself as a traveling freelance photographer takes an interest on him his first night there.

Unable to take it anymore, and frankly out of options, he purposefully spends the last dregs of magic keeping him alive to use the fairy spell one last time. He finds a hole that no monster’s arm could reach into to hopefully sleep forever. They'll never have his blood now.
He wasn’t sure what he expected of the afterlife, but the eight fussy guardians are kind of overkill.
