That dreadful night after the play, as he brought the gun up to his hand, Neil's hand shook. And unbeknonwnst to him, that shakiness saved him.
He spends some time in the hospital before convincing his father to let him stay at Welton. With his perspective changed from the near death experience, he dares experimenting with things he never would have before.
