Summary
Daisy Mae Wilde inherited her grandfather's farm two years ago. After some rather unfortunate events, she leaves her life in Zuzu City for Pelican Town in hopes of finding peace. A purpose. Instead, she finds herself tangled up in a situation she certainly didn't sign up for with Shane Cooper - Pelican Town's very own alcoholic asshole. Already struggling to stay afloat because of their own personal struggles, Daisy and Shane have to figure out how to navigate something no one else can ever know about while pretending that there totally isn't anything going on between them. This'll be easy... right?
***MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING for suicidal thoughts/attempt, mentioned childhood abuse and neglect, sibling death and grief, alcoholism, mental illness, and medical trauma. There is accidentally gore in chapter 13***

Summary
Shane and Ember have been running Greenbriar Farm together as an unlikely power couple for about five years now. She comes up with the ideas, and he provides the muscle (and occasional reality checks) she needs to accomplish them. It's a good system.
It's not easy, though, what with two young children, a snarky teenager, a house full of animals, and a cadre of interns to manage while they try to keep the farm afloat. Bills are piling up faster than the couple can get them paid, and there's not a lot of time for themselves - let alone the cave-diving Ember so desperately misses from before their kids came along.
Enter a mysterious letter in the mail, signed only "Q.", which seems to promise a solution to so many of their problems. Extra income, an outlet for Ember's adventurous spirit... What's not to like?
Oh, maybe the fact that it means diving into a volcano on a tropical island while Shane runs the farm alone. That could be a problem.

"You okay?" You were aiming for casual but it comes out overly so, like you're self-conscious about it. And, a little slurred.
"Fuck off," Shane says.
You nod. Figures. Turning, you start to walk away again when he says, "Sorry."
You stiffen, look at him. He's looking at you now, managed to tear his eyes away from the shelf.
"Sorry," he says again, with such an honesty to it. "Old habits."
Three years since you last spoke, the rumour around town is that Shane's sober now. When it proves to be true, and he wants to be friends, old wounds are reopened and old habits die hard.

Summary
Shane has lived in Pelican Town for the last five years, renting his aunt's spare bedroom as he tries to provide for his goddaughter Jas. He rots in a dead-end retail job by day and drinks away his nights to cope. He wants nothing more than to be the man his family deserves, but even when he's sober, he knows he's just a waste of space.
Ember has been disinherited from her religious family but feels equally out of place in the Zuzu City punk scene. She is adrift without a course, unable to stomach one more day of her Joja Corp internship. She's not certain her life has a point anymore. In fact, the only time she feels capable of happiness is when she is elbow deep in dirt at the community garden, or making something with the harvest in her cramped apartment kitchen.
Ember and Shane get off to a bad start when she moves to her grandfather's dilapidated farm next to the ranch. It gets worse when she starts her new job at Joja Mart to cover living expenses, making them not only neighbors but co-workers. But even when tempers have flared and shit has very much hit the fan, these two fucked up people find themselves drawn together in a family they did not expect to find.
