He was sat near the mantel-piece in the same clothes he had worn when I saw him last. He looked a bit lost in thought and I might have recognized a melancholy in his red-rimmed eyes, but I did not have time to consider it before he stood quickly at my arrival and started speaking.
“I’m sorry for being here without you knowing first, Raffles, but I think I made a fool of myself this evening and… how was the rest of your night with Miss Lawrence?”
