    “The movement and behaviour patterns of Sergeant Barnes are shifting at indistinguishable time points”, Jarvis explained. “When this happens, he usually does not talk and retreats somewhere to be alone. The only two exceptions have been this morning and five days ago, after you first fixed his arm, Sir.”
    Jarvis showed footage of Bucky watching Tony work on the suit.
    “I don’t remember that”, Bucky muttered.
    “What would you suggest, J? Some form of sleepwalking?” Tony asked.
    “Since he talked to you, Sir, that is rather unlikely,” Jarvis responded. “It seems more akin to something like hypnosis.”
    Bucky drew in a sharp breath. “It’s him”, he gasped. “It’s the Winter Soldier.”
    “You are the Winter Soldier”, Tony said.
    “No, the Winter Soldier is separate from me. He is fully Hydra’s creation.”

     
    When Steve brings Bucky to the tower to heal, after the fall of SHIELD, everything should be fine. But the Winter Soldier keeps reappearing, leaving Bucky with holes in his memories and uncomfortable, especially since the Winter Soldier makes it his mission to come on to Tony. And Bucky is not gay. He definitely likes women. So why does his alter ego insist on wanting Tony?

    Enter Bucky Barnes. Killer of his parents. Tortured into doing that very thing. Warped sentinel who, because Tony can't help his nature to accept the request for help from Steve Rogers, is now in his medical ward.

    His medical ward, suffering from category four level of sentinel zone outs.

    “Coffee!”

    Turning with a raised eyebrow, James looked at the disheveled man standing across the counter, his hair sticking up every which way, the circles under his eyes darker than James’, which up until this point he hadn’t known was possible.

    “You okay there, pal?”

    It was a stupid question, seeing the state the man was in and the very noticeable way he was swaying on his feet.

    “Peachy, Cupcake. All I need is coffee.”

    James is an amnesiac with a most likely horribly dark past but that doesn't stop him from trying to live his life as best as he can, helping out the Avengers whether they want that or not.

    Then he meets Tony and his life gets better. As long as he keeps his distance everything is going to be alright. After all, what are the chances that Tony has everything to do with the horrors of his past?

    Tony Stark and James Barnes don't get along. Maybe it was the whole "Hey, I killed your parents " thing, or the "I was once a villainous murderer" thing. Either way, they don't work together for sanity's sake. Not until now. Manhattan is under invasion, and differences must be put aside. Nothing goes to plan; Iron Man is down, and Tony's lungs are damaged by smoke inhalation. James, too, isn't in good shape, maybe because Tony stabbed him, maybe because something is very wrong with his prosthetic arm. Probably both.
    They must traverse the city turned warzone to try to reach their fellow Avengers, but between them and help are traps, bombs, and teams of soldiers that herd further and further from help. Survival pushes the pair together, and slowly the walls between them break down, and trust grows. Tony starts to see beyond the past, to the fragile human behind the legend of the Winter Soldier.
    Their bad day has turned into a bad week when they are taken captive by the enemy. An enemy whose plan is far more diabolical than any of them could have imagined. Now, they only have each other. What horrible fate is planned for them, and how will they survive? More importantly, how will they escape?

    The world keeps pushing him, demanding, because what he did wasn't enough. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but that wasn't enough, wasn't ever enough.

    Tony Stark was tired. But he had a planet to protect, even if everyone laughed at him whenever the prospect of alien invasions was brought up. He could count on one hand how many people he could trust, which was disheartening but then, what else was new?

     

    Or,

     

    In which Tony does not, in fact, intend to take over the world.

    ...unfortunately, everyone else missed that particular memo.

     

    [gradual divergence from canon, starting at the end of Iron Man 3. In which it's Tony's self-awareness, rather than his support system, that becomes a cryptid sometime during Phase II.]
