Summary
After the fall of Asgard and the attack on the Statesman, Thor lies on life support in the New Avengers Facility, balanced on the knife-edge between life and death. Loki—wrung out, furious, and grieving—finds an unexpected ally in Tony Stark, who is determined to keep Thor from dying on his watch.
Desperate for a solution, Tony tracks down a brilliant but reclusive former neurosurgeon named Stephen Strange in a last-ditch medical consultation. It takes all of one minute for Tony to decide Strange is their guy. With Strange's reluctant offer to help, Tony and Loki finally feel like they're getting somewhere.
Stephen tries to keep a professional distance from Tony and Loki (especially Loki). He has secrets he doesn't need the Avengers knowing. His own personal war. His own private hell. Instead, he becomes entangled—drawn toward Loki’s fire, Tony’s faith, and the fragile hope that maybe they can save Thor...
...but Stephen has an agenda of his own where Thor and Loki are concerned. One he must keep hidden along with his magic and the existence of his Order. One that could do harm.

Dr. Stephen Strange had begun to notice he was forgetting things.
It began with a vague sense of absence, that unsettling feeling you experience when you enter a room and forget why you went there in the first place. He had dismissed it as fatigue, nothing more than working too much and not getting enough sleep.
But then he started to notice more… anomalies.
It started with a gap, a two-week blank in his memory. It was recent enough that he couldn’t blame it on the natural fade of memory that comes with time. It was just…gone. Two weeks erased, as if someone had hacked it out of his mind.
He was content to leave it alone until he stumbled across a note tucked into one of his books.
He did not recall writing the note, but he could identify his own unsteady scrawl.
It was dated on the same day as the start of the gap in his memory. It had a series of numbers and a single warning:
If you don’t remember this, be careful. DO NOT TRUST STARK.

Stephen knew this was his time. He would fade into dust just as the others had. But it wasn't for nothing. Stark would fix this. Stark would bring everybody back in the end, like the hero he was always meant to be.
Even at such a brutal cost.
“There was no other way,” Stephen said, hoping Stark would hear what Stephen truly meant to convey — reassurance. A command not to give up, no matter how hard things might get.
And then, he waited.
And waited.
But the seconds ticked by, and he still sat there. Breathing, blinking, thinking. Why was he still here? This didn't line up with any of the outcomes he had seen. Perhaps he has misjudged the time? But his memory was better than that. He had remembered far less significant details than something like this, in situations with far less pressure.
His resignation turned to confusion as he watched the Parker boy turn to dust as well. No, this was all wrong. He was supposed to go first. What was happening? Why was it different? Everything before this had been exactly what he had seen in the future
