Summary
Loki survives the destruction of the Statesman. He is not sure why.
Thor is pulled from the wreckage alive but broken, kept breathing by machines in the New Avengers Facility while something unseen continues to unravel him. Loki is left with the unbearable arithmetic of survival: he lived, and his brother is paying the cost.
Tony Stark refuses to let that be the end of the equation. Tony pursed his lips, brow furrowing. “Stephen, do you trust me?”
“With everything,” Stephen answered, the words automatic, but no less true for how little thought had to go into them. “You know that.”
Tony met his gaze. “Let me help you.”
Stephen didn’t understand the words, but he knew, instinctively, that he needed it. Because Stephen was free, but he didn’t feel free.
“You can’t,” Stephen said. The trap wasn’t physical or magical or real. The trap was in his head.
Tony’s smile was small but real. “I can’t,” Tony said. “We can.” He leaned forward, kissed Stephen gently. “Trust me, Stephen.”
Stephen closed his eyes, leaned into Tony and breathed. Tony smelled of burnt metal and sweat with a faint underscore of the cologne Stephen had chosen for him. The scent grounded him. Free. Safe. Tony had him.
Tension eased.
An aborted honk shattered the peace. The world moved again.
“I trust you,” Stephen said.
“It’s going to take time,” Tony said, the sound of the city trying to hide his words. “But I promise, Stephen, you’re going to heal.”
