Scott breathed deeply, trying to hold in his excitement long enough to eat breakfast. He'd been waiting for this for months. He had been so certain he wouldn't get the job, but he'd applied anyway, just out of sheer hope that maybe the stars would align.
Apparently they did.
He'd been practically vibrating out of his seat ever since he'd signed the contract. This was what he'd always wanted. Ever since he was tiny he'd known he wanted to be a vet who specialised in magical creatures. He hadn't changed his mind on that through the years, not even when university tried to kill him off or when his family members tried to tell him horror stories to get him to change his mind.
This, despite the downsides and the dangers and the hard work, was his purpose in life. He just knew it.

The bell chimes as he pushes through the door and leaves a smear of black liquid across the door handle. It’s from his mouth. He already vomited up a pile of the murky sludge a few blocks ago but he feels more threatening to come up, he does his best to shove it down. The bright lights of the clinic all but blinding him do nothing to help the nausea nor does the strong smell of clinical grade cleaner being dumped into a mop bucket. It’s closing time.

Merlin, a vet student, starts his final work placement at the stables of Uther Pendragon, current head of the Irish Horseracing Association. When Merlin refuses to sell a prime eventing horse to Uther, Uther insists Merlin must learn eventing and compete with the horse himself. Uther makes his son, Arthur, be Merlin's coach.
Arthur is an arrogant jockey and former eventer who argues with Merlin non-stop. But Merlin can't afford to lose his work placement. And Arthur is, to his credit, a surprisingly good teacher.
No horse knowledge needed.
