Yoichi is a steady presence at his side, hands gently brushing until they take up some space for the parade and the more they walk, the more comfortable he feels. There's joy and people celebrating everywhere he looks; it's empowering. That's when Yoichi takes his hand fully into his own, fingers interlaced, as they walk together.

"You should have worn a bow," he finally murmurs, "you know, like a present?"
To give Rin credit, he doesn't roll his eyes, but he does huff a quiet, "Stupid." It lacks Rin's usual venom; it's softer, warmer, and as he tips Yoichi backwards and settles over him, Yoichi sees the future.
Yoichi's birthday present comes a little late. Waiting for Rin is always worth it.

What's even more confounding is how well Isagi can read him, like he's an open book, and yet he hasn't turned away from the ugliness that Rin hides under his skin. If anything it seems to have endeared Isagi to him more which, really, says more about him as a person than it does Rin.
Isagi is a problem that Rin can't quite work out.

He licks his lips, blood and sweat and spit smearing across his sharp face. He looks like a massacre.
He trails a finger through the blood collecting in the line of his chest, dragging it slowly down his front over faded top surgery scars, through the ridges of his abs, coasting over the slight rise at the bottom of his stomach before slipping between his thighs.
“This does something for you.”
Isagi blinks, eyes flickering across Rin’s face as he looks down his busted nose at him.
“What? No way.” Isagi croaks.
Rin hums, grinding sinuously into Isagi’s lap. “You’re a shit liar.”

Rin gets a nosebleed during practice. Isagi feels very normal about it. (spoiler alert neither of them are normal about it)

Summary
Of casual arrangements and unrequited feelings.
Rin stays where he is, weight still pinning Yoichi to the bed, and Yoichi wraps his arms around him and holds on because he knows what comes next. He knows this moment won’t last. His body is still trembling with aftershocks, hypersensitive and raw, and Rin is still inside him, softening but present, and Yoichi wants to stay here forever, wants to live in this space where Rin is warm and heavy and real against him.
He keeps his eyes closed and tries to memorize the feeling. The weight. The warmth. The way Rin’s breath evens out against his neck. The particular ache of being stretched open and filled, the ghost of pleasure still humming under his skin. He loves this. He loves Rin.
He’s so in love with Rin it feels like drowning.

Summary
His hand ghosts against Rin’s zipper, the hardness that is concealed there, and Rin freezes. They once again dive into silence, into the lingering vibration of string. “What are you doing?”
“Keep going,” Yoichi deflects. Between his thumb and pointer, he pulls on the zipper until it’s no longer connected. He releases the button, the last strand holding him together. Rin turns his head, and his eyes are darker than before, his pupils unfocused. Yoichi gently kisses his cheek, “Don’t stop playing.”
Before Rin can say anything more, Yoichi is sliding off the bench and onto his knees.
or, Yoichi is determined to defeat his greatest rival, piano prodigy Rin Itoshi.
