It was a child. A boy, in full Amestrian military uniform, sporting four stripes and one star. And there, on his jacket collar: a State Alchemists pin.
Roy remembers his first thought, quite immaturely, being hang on, aren't I supposed to be the youngest State Alchemist?
His second, more sensible thought was less coherent and more a visceral flood of fearsome protection and despair, and the accusatory assessment that this was no place for a child.

Ed is born a few years earlier, and so is old enough to be called to Ishval under Order 3066.

“Oh.” His eyes that have been wandering around the town square where they’re sitting – it’s not even a square, she doesn’t know why they call it that – slide around to fix on her as his face settles into a forced evenness as he weighs this new and unforeseen complication. Why would you do that? she imagines him asking or, where would you possibly go? or stop wasting time. “Then you leave, I guess.”
“You won’t stop me?”
“I’d hope you’d be smart about it.”
“You won’t hunt me down and bring me back?”
Back where? she imagines him retorting, and feels foolish for even asking. “What would be the use of that?” he grunts instead.

Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.
‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’
Edward blinked, utterly baffled.
‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’
Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.
It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.

Edward Elric, youngest State Alchemist in history, is 15 when Executive Order 3066 takes effect, turning a civil war into genocide.
All State Alchemists are to serve at the front lines of Ishval and kill indiscriminately, humans turned weapons.

Ed shields his eyes against the blazing desert sun of Ishval and tries to ignore the way his white glove is stained red, pretends it’s oil instead of blood.
There is a wave of heat from somewhere to his right and up ahead, yards away but unnaturally strong, and the wind carries with it screams and the smell of burning flesh.
A shot echoes through the stillness of the high noon, and he counts to five in his head. Another shot.

Mum does not live long enough to see the truth in Edward’s words. She doesn’t live long enough to see him throw away his principles, either, though, so there’s that.
(AKA, an AU where Ed was born several years earlier than in canon, finds himself in the military under a different set of circumstances, and discovers, aged 15, just how much war changes things.)
