Now she’s the one crammed into the corner; Yasha and Fjord are squished into the same cage, the three of them filling every available space. Jester’s head is against Fjord’s shoulder, and Yasha’s feet are tangled with her own. The metal bars surrounding them remain cold in the winter wind.
Their hands and feet are bound, the iron manacles rubbing Jester’s skin raw as the wagon continues onto this fourth day of travel. It’s boring, the long days blending one into another with little to mark the passage of time.

Mark had convinced her to throw out her latest pills, because she was complaining about how she couldn’t connect to her patients. How else was he supposed to react?
Owen groans in exasperation. “They were working, Joan!” He stands and reaches for his bag, grabbing a notebook out of it. “I guess we can go back to the doctors and try again.”

He turns to her now, and she can see an apology in the crease of his eyebrows, the stuttering breath of his inhale. She says, before he can speak, “Do you know what Jester said? When we were in there, looking for you?”
The eyebrow crease becomes confusion, concern. “What did she say?”
“You reminded her of Molly.”
Whatever he had thought she was going to say, he clearly hadn’t been expecting that. He barks out a sort of strangled laugh and presses his palms to his eyes. “And you?” He asks through his fingers.
Oh. Her throat aches. She swallows. The feeling just gets sharper. She stands next to him so they don’t have to make eye contact. She can feel him trembling. “You don’t remind me of Molly,” she manages to say.
(Yasha kills another friend. He tries to thank her for it).

“You embarrassed me,” Occtis hisses. “You embarrassed me today.”
The boy is standing over the bed, gaze fixed on the mattress, seeing nothing as his clever mind fixates on some unknown fact of Julien’s prior conduct.
Julien tries to play the day’s hectic events back through his mind, but their flight from Dol-Makjar was a fearful one plagued by paranoia, so much so that he finds his recall hampered. He’s sure he was an asshole to everyone all day, but he doesn’t remember aiming it at Occtis, at least not on purpose.
Waiting for Occtis to volunteer information tends to involve more patience than Julien has handy, so he’d might as well ask. “When did I embarrass you?”
Occtis still doesn’t look at him. “You picked me up like a sack of grain in front of all of our colleagues.”
Of all the things to have a fight about right now, Julien feels like this isn’t the one he’d personally pick, and a stupid part of him wants to say so. An even stupider part of him wants to point out that that was last night, not today.
He manages to hold his tongue on these two points, but he can’t keep his ire from his tone. “What did you expect me to do? Leave you behind?”
