The entire procedure was mundane and entirely anticlimactic. Nothing ever happened with Damien.
That was until three days ago.
And it’s not like Sam dropped everything and got in a car, no, she thought everything through rationally. It wasn’t normal for a person to just disappear for five days. Despite how dangerous he could be with his ability and how unpleasant he was with or without it, Damien was still a person. And if he was in trouble ‒ passed out in a ditch somewhere, God forbid something worse ‒ and Sam was the only one to know, she had a moral obligation to make it right. So she got her affairs in order, and she followed her good conscience.

Summary
To Sam, it was obvious that the only way to slay the dragon that refused to leave Mark alone, even after it had been run out of town, was knowing what exactly the dragon had done. It meant knowing if it had sunk its teeth into Mark’s soft skin, or singed him with flames, or spit acid, or…something else a dragon could do. Scratched him with razor sharp claws, maybe.
The metaphor was getting away from her. What mattered was that the answer was somewhere in the past, buried in run down motels and long, solitary stretches of highway. It was there with the two of them, alone on the road for months that Mark never wanted to talk about. What he'd done to Mark was there.
She just needed to find it.

Summary
Five years ago, Damien made a mistake in trusting his new therapist. He made a mistake in thinking that he'd be able to find someone like him in the world. And in that mistake, there were consequences. Whisked away to a government agency to be experimented on and effectively tortured, he suffers. He wilts. He can't die because they won't let him. Slowly, he loses a sense of himself. Nearly five years in and there's a whisper. Someone with an unheard of ability. And that someone is related to his former therapist.
Mark Bryant has kept his ability secret at the behest of his sister. He doesn't associate with Atypicals purposefully if only because he's been warned it could lead to 'bad things' happening to him. So, he focuses on his photography. Builds his portfolio. Flirts and acts like an all around normal person. But he's not normal. He doesn't think so, at least.
It's night when a voice twists in his mind and makes him stop in his tracks. A press of want to get into this stranger's van. A desire to learn and work this new ability he has access to.
And a desire to tear down a place that only serves to hurt the truly strange and unique.
