Gale knows what's happening to John. Knows that something's been knocked a little loose by the cold and the gray and the fences rising all around them. He howls through his games; he barks at the guards and the men; he snaps and snarls and foams at the mouth.

Summary
Gale squeezed his eyes shut but it did little to stop the tears. He pulled his hands out of John’s grip to press the heels to his eyes. Guilt and panic were making it hard for him to breathe. To think. He needed to do something. Needed to say something before he lost his mind.
“No, no I need to- I need”
Language was escaping him and Gale couldn’t stop crying. His breathing was coming out ragged and forced. He felt like the abyss was back to swallow him whole. John took hold of his wrists. Pulling them away from his eyes and holding him firmly.
“What do you need?”
John asked. Sounding desperate. Gale bit his lip hard enough to draw blood. Tasting the saltiness of his own tears.
“I need you to forgive me. Tell me you forgive me. Please”
Or Gale’s guilt about leaving John behind manifests as a nightmare and John comforts him.

Repeating it to himself as the questioning went on. After all this was the behavior he’d been expecting from the beginning especially since what had happened back at that cursed town. Weathering the pain as he was drawn to his knees, arms twisted up behind his back, grunted at the pain of strained joints. Grunting again when his head was yanked back by the hair so he was looking up at Stromburg, who’d moved from around the desk, leaning against it.

This story sprung from my obsession with Bucky in the Dulag as well as the scars on Buck's cheeks. I've seen in other comments that Buck and Bucky were apparently held at the Dulag at the same time, in real life? So I thought, if that's so, why not take advantage of that fact.

“It’ll be fun,” Marge says to him over the phone as he’s unpacking another box in his tiny, studio apartment. “I’ve been to a few other classes, it’s a good environment.”
“It doesn’t sound like my sort of environment, Marge,” Gale says, picking up an astrophysics textbook that pushes the bounds of what a single-handed grip is capable of. It strains the tendons in his wrist as he tries not to drop it on the way to its new home in the built-in bookshelf. The edges of it are bloated, almost rubbery with how many times it’s been painted over in the same shade of white, a few spots chipped away to show rich brown wood underneath.
“Your sort of environment is on a hill with a telescope, with nobody around.”

Summary
The war ended, but the silence never came. Instead, John Egan lives with a phantom ache in his ribs and the terrifying certainty that Gale Cleven is dreaming someone else's nightmares.
It starts with a letter found in the attic - a reminder of a desperate blood oath sworn in a rain-soaked barn. It ends with the realization that Curtis Biddick didn't die over Regensburg, and the supernatural bond that kept them alive is now dragging them back together.
To stop the haunting, they have to bring him home. But the house is too small for three ghosts who haven't realized they're still alive, and the line between hatred and hunger is thinner than John remembers.

Gale Cleven is going to lead this squadron, and no measly mechanical failure is going to get in his way. It doesn’t seem possible, Benny’s still tracking the path they’d take if — when — if they have to pull aside, just in case, but the only person remotely capable of winning an argument with Buck is off in London on a weekend pass. His hopes aren’t high.
But everything’s gotta end sometime, after all. Everything’s gotta come back down.
