Summary
“–Come Durin’s Day, the Mountain will host great entertainments, games, and feasting in your name and in the names of the other thirteen of the Company. Your path through all of Arda shall be made smooth to ensure your welcome in our lands, Bilbo Baggins. I bring this summons as it was sent from the Throne of Thorin, King Under the Mountain.”
Bilbo’s heart, racing as it had been from this thrilling invitation, seemed to trip over itself at the name. “Thorin?” he whispered, and he stepped forward without thinking.
--
Or: Bilbo learns that his story isn’t actually a tragedy, and that happy endings still take a bit of luck.

Summary
Charles wakes up alive in his childhood bed. He can't remember very much, but nothing seems quite right.
--
"You're silly, darling," she says as she shakes her head.
"No, I'm serious, mum." He shifts on the hard surface of the wooden chair, furrowing his brows. He can feel something inside his chest-- like a solid mass. He presses a hand over it, surprised to find himself surprised at the way he can feel his own shirt, all the fibres and the texture of the cotton. "Have you ever cooked me brekkie before?"
She turns towards him, a half-smile on her face. "Charles, I cook you breakfast every day. What's gotten into you?"
He laughs it off, because she’s right. If she’s telling the truth-- and he can't imagine why she wouldn't be-- then it was, quite frankly, a ridiculous fucking thing to ask. "I--... Yeah, yeah... You're right. I'm sorry." For a reason beyond himself, he feels apologetic.

Summary
Light flares up from the book, white and blinding. When she blinks away the spots from her vision the room is gone. The book is gone.
Dim green light casts a sickly pall down a long, decrepit looking hallway. She takes a breath and nearly chokes on the smell of dust and rot and something else, sharp and unnatural, like ozone. The light doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere in particular. It gives the place an eerie unreality. It makes her skin crawl.
