He runs a hand through his hair as different voices begin to bounce off each other, squeezing his eyes shut tight and focusing on James’s words that go in one ear and melt out the other uselessly. “Quiet,” He says in a tempered hush, barely audible. James looks up at him with a mild questioning look. Shaking his head and raising a hand, “No, not you. Apologies, James. I,” Sherlock sighs, “I thought I’d heard something. Do go on.”
OR: It's fairly safe to say that Cordelia's affliction could be hereditary. What if Sherlock descended into an episode after finding out some distressing information? And what if James, unequipped to handle one, tried to sort of help?

Summary
As with many portents, Edwin did not understand what he was looking at until it was entirely too late. Perhaps if he had paid more attention, perhaps if he had looked for the bigger picture, perhaps if… Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. Yet the gears of destiny churn ever more, and there is little that can impede the wheel of fate.
After a chance encounter with a demon, Edwin and Charles are reminded that while Edwin’s soul may be his own, his body remains in Hell. As the leash tightens between body and soul, it is clear that only one choice remains. Charles and Edwin must return to Hell to retrieve Edwin’s body before it’s too late. So begins a perilous return to the Inferno.

“You’re fond of him,” Xiao Wei says as they approach the doors of the Palace of Entertainment.
“You’ll have to clarify, I am fond of many,” James says as he opens the door for Xiao Wei. “After you, my dear princess,” he bows.
“It’s different with Sherlock, you cannot fool me James,” Xiao Wei states as she swishes on by, inside into the cooler lobby.
James’ grin twists a bit, going sharp as his eyes are going dark, eyes of a shark as Xiao Wei needlessly bleeds at a wound that shouldn't be touched. “Yes, yes, it is different with him. I tend to keep it that way.”

Or maybe Sherlock getting shot in front of James fucks him up more than he thought it would and it becomes everyone's Problem and doesn't entirely change the course of things, but dramatically changes their entire relationship.

Nobody's ever been able to catch them and they're keen to keep it that way.
After being run out of another town following a difficult case, the two are ready for a quiet night. Neither of them realize their streak of good luck is about to run out.

“Is over, and you’ve been making that argument every day for the last month. It’s been seven, Edwin, you’re a month late, we’re doing it now.”
“I really don’t feel that’s necessary,” Edwin said as he phased through the door, and Crystal heard the stiffness in it even before she could see his face. The face was all tight, and Charles’s was, too, as he followed Edwin through, although Charles was trying to cover it by looking confident and firm.(Edwin tries to avoid unpleasant-but-necessary medical care, Charles has to fill a role he does not enjoy, and Crystal may, somehow, not entirely against her will, be getting roped in as a platonic third to Charles and Edwin's totally-not-a-decades-long-marriage.)
