The Wildwood is a real wood, with real trees and plants, inhabited by real animals and birds. And at the very same time it is The Wildwood, old beyond time, well spring of myths, legends, and folklore. If it pulls you into a story then it is the place where Once Upon a Time is now, magic is real, and wishes and dreams do come true.
Another collection of short stories set in and around the Wildwood, each one based on a line from a magpie counting rhyme. One story will posted each month for the rest of the 2023.

Summary
What if BBC Sherlock’s John Watson wasn’t an "Army Doctor" but someone who trained as a GP and then chose to change careers completely and joined the British army as an Infantry Officer?
Well, it's been my head canon that this is the case since I first saw ASiP and John's dream of fighting on the front line and when I started looked at BBC canon for John's past in light of the research I'd been doing on the British Army, I came to the conclusion that it was actually an acceptable interpretation of the majority of it. Especially given how little research TPTB seem to have put into updating John's career for either modern medical practices or the modern Army (it's a mess, I tell you, an absolutely mess - just look at the travesty of a CV).
Thus this series of meta will be, when finished:
1) An analysis of all mentions of John's army career in BBC canon, from the perspective of whether this supports or negates my pet theory,
and
2) A place to share useful information I've gathered whilst researching the British Army and the Afghanistan conflict that other fic writers and artists who like writing Army!John might find useful.Please be aware this is very much a work in progress!

Summary
All these fics feature a John Watson who has a different backstory to the one that is generally accepted as the real one within the Sherlock fandom. In all of these John Watson has never been an "Army Doctor" (a descriptor he has never actually uttered himself, just one he's never disagreed with when used by other people).
Instead these fics feature a John who has had two careers; the first as a medical student and then a GP for a few years; the second after he enlisted in the British Armed Forces, either as an officer in an Infantry Regiment of the Army or as an officer in the Royal Marine Commandos.
I have linked them together under a series header because I wanted to quickly be able to find all the stories I've written that rely to some extent on John having been an infantry soldier, rather than in the RAMC.
I also hope it will help those of you who like their BAMF!John with those credentials find them as well.
