Summary
Dennis Whitaker works with the PTMC outreach team, delivering medications and companionship to a bitter, one-legged patient named Greg. Greg, who lives in a sparse studio apartment with no books, no music, and nothing but the ghost of a man named James to keep him company.
When a bad fall lands Greg in the ER, Dennis expects a routine concussion workup. What he doesn't expect is for his cantankerous patient to start diagnosing the woman in the next bay with the kind of ruthless, brilliant arrogance that suggests Greg was never just a doctor's husband.A story about finding purpose, second chances, and the dignity of being seen -and being useful.

Summary
If there's one thing Jack likes to be, it's busy. Movement, noise, action; these are the essential ingredients that keep the hands of the clock ticking during the hours of 7pm and 7am when he isn't buzzing around the ED.
Jack's never had much use for sitting still. Even in his mother's womb he'd kick like a mule and somersault if she sat down for more than twenty minutes.
Or so she loves to tell him.
Her sleep pattern was fucked up long before he popped out of her on the backseat of his parents Mustang. Now, he guesses, he's bound by something bigger than him that pushes his body to keep going, something great and vast and immeasurable that dwells in the dead hours when feels so very alive.
Moving the body he's trained to exist in the dark; the nighttime guided around him by his own hands.
Or:
vignettes of jack's life outside work in the hours when most people are asleep, stitched together by a common thread of care, comfort and love for robby.

Peter gets the call on a Thursday in late July, mid-shift. He’s on the next flight out of Chicago.
“Is this Doctor Peter Benton?”
“Speaking.”
“Hello, Doctor Benton. I’m calling from the Frederickson Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. I have you listed as the emergency contact for John Carter?”
“What’s happened.”
“I’m afraid that a few hours ago, Doctor Carter was admitted to the hospital with some very serious injuries.”
“What kind of injuries, exactly?”
“Doctor Benton, he was bleeding significantly from his left arm and wrist. It appears… Well, it appears he made an attempt on his own life.”
Everything after that is a blur.

Summary
A fuck-up at work triggers bad memories and bad habits for John Carter. In the midst of a record heat wave, Carter goes for a punishing run on his family's property, with terrible consequences. Peter Benton to the rescue.
He puts his fingers to Carter’s neck, and is horribly unsurprised at the weak, thready, and extremely rapid pulse he feels beneath the skin. Tachycardic. Very tachycardic.
A hand on John’s forehead is all but confirmation of Peter’s fears. His face is blazing hot, more like touching a furnace than human skin.
Heat stroke.
