Summary
"I've been with the Carter family since before little John was born. I know this family. They really aren't a bad bunch, but yes, his father has hurt him before. It started when John was quite young. About ten years old, I'd guess."
"You've known that Carter was getting abused for 14 years and didn't tell anyone?!"
"Oh, abuse is such a callous word!" The woman yelled, her voice angry beneath the sadness. There was a bit of shame clouding her expression, but she covered it with the need to deny deny deny. "And you mustn't tell anyone. You will ruin Mr. Carter's name if you do. Ask John, he'll tell you the same thing."

Summary
Mark, Doug, and Carol head outside first to meet the ambulance, when someone laying flat on the concrete catches Carol's eye. She immediately runs up to check on the stranger then is taken back when she realizes it's not in fact a stranger at all.
"It's Carter!" She shouts, already dropping to her knees beside him. His eyes lay closed against his bloody and bruised face, his soft lashes a sharp contrast against the angry looking skin. "Get a gurney!" She shouts, eyes not leaving him. Carter's head is lolled toward her and blood is collecting beneath his head from somewhere on his scalp and his nose.
"Shit, Carter?" Mark asks loudly, tapping his shoulder as he drops to the pavement as well. "Carter can you hear me?"
Or

Set s7/s8.
Peter walks into the men’s bathroom in the ER and, for a moment, he is transported back in time. Valentine’s Day decorations hanging from the walls. Blood on the floor of Curtain Area 3. Blood on his hands, blood on his shoes.
John Carter is unconscious on the bathroom floor. He’s white as a sheet. And he’s covered in blood.
For a moment, Peter thinks the worst.

Summary
“Carter? Open your eyes, man. Time to wake up.”
For a moment, he wonders whether he's back in rehab, enduring the relentless interference of the staff there. With every sensation that returns, though, this notion slips away. The mattress beneath him is certainly not comfortable, but it's a far cry from the sheet-less rigidity of his bed in rehab. He's warm, too, covered in blankets fresh from the dryer. The pain in his back feels like a distant memory.
And the voice that he hears belongs to Peter Benton

Summary
"Mister, please open your eyes again, we're gonna die out here if you don't open your eyes." She gently tapped his faced and pried open his left eye. His right eye was swollen shut and blood covered that side of his face in thick patches. He was barely breathing, crushed, and bleeding and they'd been stuck in the rain for what seemed like an eternity.
The rain had finally let up as the young woman tried desperately to wake him again. He'd said his name was Carter. She didn't know if that was his first name or his last name, but she knew he was in serious trouble.

So he just watches them even if it nearly kills him to do so.
All he can feel is jealousy when they're around, which then is replaced with shame and tucked in some corner of his mind. He shouldn't feel this way about people who he loves so much. He knows he shouldn't let his grief get the worst of him.

Years have gone by since his son passed away and he still misses what he never had. That's the most frightening part for Carter.

Something Mark never quite gets used to is how quickly patients can deteriorate. Just when you think you've pulled them from rock bottom, that alarm blares, and things get worse than you ever thought possible. It's jarring at the best of times.
It's even worse when it's your own fault.

An alternate universe story of my favorite ER ship. How can the characters of ER interact in a school setting OR how come the rivalry between Benton and Corday can fit in any plot and still be good
