James Fitzjames stops as if struck by lightning. The hand still gripping the handle doesn’t visibly tremble, but he feels that nervous quivering inside, throughout his whole body, as if he were about to explode.
“I wanted to forget about him,” he says, speaking consciously for the first time during this encounter. The woman catches the hint, but only partially; as he steps out onto the street, he can still hear her mocking voice behind him:
“You’re not doing very well at this, darling!”
James Fitzjames has returned from the expedition. He is very changed.

Summary
James knew then, with a devastating certainty, that there was nothing awaiting him in England. This shell of a man he had become, or rather what yolk had run out once the shell was broken, had no friends there. All who once knew him would look at him with this same pity, and excuse themselves from his company. He no longer had anything to offer them to keep them by his side.
A story about longing and belonging.

The consequences of taking a dip in Arctic waters catch up to him, leaving Francis to contend with the idea of maybe ending up the only expedition leader still alive. All while wrestling with the complicated feelings he has towards Fitzjames.
