Laurens’ eyes dart away from him, trying not to look back at the tent where Alexander lays hurt. He raises his head towards the sky, the sunlight shining across his face, warmth delicately kissing cheeks. The touch feels electric, memorable, it doesn't burn, it blooms.
Closing his eyes, he pictures Alex, smiling, gentle and true, holding his face with both palms. His violet eyes sparkle like a star, and the wind blows through his red curls sending them in every direction. Alex steps closer, pressing himself to his chest warm and safe.
In a final decision Laurens shakes his head, turning away, back facing the warm light as his face returns to the group of soldiers waiting for his command.
A cloud appears, and the sun’s radiant smile is shut away. “The troops are waiting.”
