There's trouble brewing. The year is 1774, and Benjamin Tallmadge is a newly minted minister freshly arrived at his new post in Albany New York, a city teaming with bloody backs, or British soldiers. Most would assume that the minister would stay as far away as possible from the conflict, however within a matter of days, Tallmadge gets sucked into a world that he could never imagine, all because of a ghost story from the owner of the Hudson Tavern, one Nathan Hale.

Major Tallmadge has not forgotten September 22, 1776. The day his much loved classmate at Yale was torn from being his own private Pythias to being property of the country, to being flaunted as martyred propaganda.
With that thought plaguing his mind, Tallmadge can't help but feel a shiver of familiarity down his spine as on almost the exact fourth year's anniversary of his beloved friend's death, the news of a captured man, one John Anderson, is brought to him. And so, as one domino tips down another, similar is Major Tallmadge's fate again as he finds himself entwined with yet another martyred spy to be made property of the war.
