A horrible, deafening snap splits the silence, sending a freezing chill down her spine. It startles both her and the pheasant; it squawks wildly, shooting into the air in a frenzy of feathers.
Riza swings her gaze towards the source of the noise, still peering through the rifle's scope.
Run, something inside her whispers. But she ignores it—maybe it's a boar. Or something larger, maybe a deer or an elk, something they could live off for weeks. Her stomach growls at the thought, saliva pooling in her mouth.
The idea of having enough meat to last, of not having to worry about hunger for once, keeps her rooted in place despite the fear creeping down her spine.
The thought is snuffed out almost instantly.
There's a crash—branches splintering, leaves crunching—and it dawns on her that whatever's out there is something much, much larger than a deer."
