A.K.A: He’s alive, but not well. The boys learn what proper communication is as they journey through the stages of brain damage recovery (and the first step of that is acceptance, contrarily).

Summary
A week following Derek's death, Avery gets a knock on his door from an old woman holding a dog on a leash. She explains that she's Derek's next-door neighbour and that he has entrusted his beloved German Shepherd to Avery. Suddenly unable to wallow in grief alone, Avery must learn about Derek through the things he has left behind, taking care of his legacy and slowly understanding why he thought the world was beautiful enough to die for.
Like ivy worming its way through bricks and foundations, impossible to cull, grief exists in the knowledge of everything. All that this world is built on will one day die. Species will go extinct, mothers will die in childbirth, dogs will be left without owners. The cycle of life is a cycle of abandonment, trudging on through the loss and the emptiness. You spend your whole life missing things until you die and, if you’re lucky, something misses you.
And Laika is the only piece of Derek that Avery can touch. She is the gravestone he must nurture.

There are some great quick-and-dirty guides to HTML on A03. This is not one of them - it is a comprehensive guide
It's now 2025, a decade later. A03 supports some new HTML and and we're all walking around reading fic on supercomputers that fit in a jean pocket. It was time to update.
The previous three chapters have been divided into smaller concepts. Each tag continues to have - at a minimum - a link to the w3schools page about it (so you can learn more), a code example, and the result of the code example. Most tags have their attributes, things like [src] or [title], listed and examples of how using the attributes modify the tags.
There's a chapter on Bad Ideas, including how some of the archive's default CSS is available to you to format your work (users can't turn that off by hiding a workskin!)
Oh. And I added a bunny army. You could learn how to add one too.

On New Year's Eve of 2025, Avery has a maybe-fake experience that changes his life. With no way to figure out who Derek is— was— if he was even real, or if they actually saved the world, Avery tries to leave it behind. But he's haunted by what he saw, and what he failed to do, in that Minecraft world as the clock ticked into the New Year.
And then, just as he thinks maybe he can finally move on, Derek finds him. He's alive, and mostly intact, and Avery allows the relief and joy of seeing his friend in real life to overshadow the cracks creeping through Derek's even-keeled facade. “You want to throw my laptop off a cliff.”
“Or smash it. Or set it on fire. Or all three. We can workshop it.”
There’s another quiet laugh, but it doesn’t quite stick the landing. Avery hears the hesitation creeping back in, curling around the edges of D3r’s voice like fog.
“In person,” D3r says, not quite a question.
“Yeah,” Avery says easily, like it doesn’t make his stomach flip. “In person. I wanna meet you.”
The words hang between them.
He watches D3r’s character on screen because it’s easier than imagining D3r’s face doing whatever it’s doing right now. The avatar doesn’t react, of course. Just stands there in the pixelated grass, the moon casting a pale square light over his shoulders. Avery imagines he can see tension in the way the model is angled, which is ridiculous, but he’s very good at projecting onto blockmen at this point.
